Had an interesting conversation with a guy in the weekend about drum
brakes on older XR's. He mentioned that some of them at some point had
double leading edge drums on the front.

Any idea about which years this would be and if I could drop one
straight into my 83 XR350?

thanks

I replaced the single leading shoe brake system on my 1980 Yamaha IT
175 with the brakes from a 1982 yz 125 and it slipped right on. I also
have an early RM 125 with the same kind of set up. Lots of honda stuff
interchanges. Just monkey around a bit and see if it works. I know a
guy who repalced the whole front end on his Maico 440 with one from
Honda 350 with a disk brake and it works well. OF

Thanks for that. Was hoping to get an idea of which early XR models had
double leading edge brakes.

I like my 350 but trying to stop it sometimes is hair raising!

I have a 500 like that also. You gotta think ahead. Make an appointment
with it to secure a stop on time. And 350 brakes are supposed to be
awsome. OF

SNOman mistates:

Betcha get a great shave with those!

It's double leading shoe. Both brake shoes are self-actuating which
I'm
sure now that you know that it's shoe and not edge, you can google and
find a picture explaining it.

You're welcome.

I regularly use the rear wheel of the bike in front of me to assist
stopping when doing some of the cross country events Smile

It's actually the edge on the shoe is it not? Had already found a good
site thanks and they refer to it as double leading edge Wink

http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/entrypoint.html?menu.html&bra...bible.h

Not trying to find information on how it works though. Trying to find
info on which early XR models used this

SNOman points to an example of why you shouldn't believe anything you
read on the net:::

> they refer to it as double leading edge Wink

They also tell you that single leading "edge" doesn't work when rolling
backwards which is wrong. A *double* leading *shoe* doesn't work as
well when rolling backwards because neither shoe self-actuates.

The whole thing about the trailing edge not contacting the drum is
bullfizzle too - take a look at the shoes you take out and look at
the contact marks on them.

Go fast. Take chances.
