Very good to know, thanks. I think I'll spring for the extra 4 bux a
month and get the service. Since I ride my bike to all three jobs here
in town, having traffic info right on my GPS would be a very good
thing. If it saved me a few minutes a month in commuting time it'd pay
for itself.
And, the weather is available on the built-in HD WB anyway.

I don't mind a bit. Coffe for me - that after work shot 'n' beer put
me to sleep in my chair for an hour and a half, and the missus is due
home any minute! Prolly pissed, too, since she had to work late.

Put the antenna on top of the factory radio up under the fairing.
Who needs a stinking special made bracket, it's got a magnet, don't it?
I'm running a Sirrius, but I think other folks running XM have done the
same thing with equally good results. It is an Ultra clean intall and works
well. Fiberglass or plastic won't affect the reception.

With the XM antenna inside the fairing of my Ultra, I got 2 bars outa 5 (at
most) on my signal strength meter. I'd lose signal completely when riding
through areas with trees or in the mountains......
The dealer did the original install of my XM (before I even saw the bike). I had
issues with it and reception for damn near a year as I fiddled with antenna
location inside the fairing, Musta had the fairing off a dozen times...<sfsf>.
FINALLY moved my XM antenna out to where it had open sky, now I have 5 bars outa
5 most all the time.....and no more lost signal when I ride up in the mountains
or other places where there are trees, etc.
Itty Bitty square of velcro keeps it in place, it sits on the top of the inner
fairing just above my front/left speaker, less than an inch of the little
antenna cable shows.
The thing needs to see open sky.........no different than satellite TV antennas
(dish), where trees or even heavy clouds/rain can block the signal from space.

Do you move the antenna off your bike whenever you move the receiver,
or do you have multiple antennas? Reason I ask is, the XM30 antenna
for the Zumo is very pricey - around $200 on Amazon. I am wondering if
the actual radio subscription is tied to the XM30 antenna, or to the
Zumo itself. I would have thought, the Zumo, not the antenna. But,
since a "normal" XM radio costs around $200, I'm just wondering.
Shirley, I think we're all a bit thirsty, so come a runnin', please...

I've got an antenna on the bike, another on the truck, another in the house.
My bike came setup, all I had to do was buy the Ski-Fi and plug it in......
The Ski-Fi (about $100) came with a complete car kit, I installed the car kit in
my pickup....
Daughter bought me a home kit for about $50, included the antenna......
XM subscriptions are tied to the receiver serial#.
After I was a subscriber for a while, I started getting offers from XM for free
receivers for my other vehicles.......with a reduced rate for them. I pay by the
year, the "deal" I usually get is pay for 10 months, get a year......

Might try that, too. I agree it needs as many bars as it can get.
Heck, when I drive my XM-equipped car under a bridge, I lose signal
for a couple seconds, and that antenna is wide open to the sky on top
of the car.

I've ended up in the same place, just got there backwards. '04 Pontiac
came with it installed; I bought 5 years up front, which will expire
in 2009. Wife's '08 Impala came with it installed; I just went for the
$6.99/month for the second subscription (which is about what the
Pontiac price was when I bought 5 years in advance). Zumo came
XM-ready but you had to buy the $200 antenna, so I'm anticipating a
third subscription for the bike at $6.99. The only reason to move the
XM part of the Zumo (the antenna itself) to either car when I want GPS
is, I'm going to give the NavTraffic subscription a try, and if it's
really great, I'll have to figure out a way to move the XM30 antenna
along with the Zumo.
Sheesh, my head hurts. Shirley......

Of course, I could just ride the bike and keep the damn radio, GPS,
CB, intercom, etc. off and just enjoy the ride like I used to...soon
as it stops snowing/raining/sleeting, that is.

Forgot to mention my DirecTV has most of the XM stations, and I can
stream them online, too. What am I listening to now?
Nothing. Hard to concentrate on IT stuff when Deep Tracks is blaring
in your ear!

<sfsf>
I listen to Deep Tracks and Top Tracks.......there's a Blues station in there
somewhere that I like.....as well as one that plays Led Zepplin stuff 24/7.
I've got CNN and Air America plugged into my top 10 somewhere as well as Phoenix
traffic/weather.

Yup, I like all three of those, and also Big Tracks. "The Blend" is
nice when I don't want to be distracted too much. And XM2 on
Wednesdays plays "Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour" all day long. My
wife likes the Decades stations, where she can listen to '40's or
'50's or whatever decade she's in the mood for. And the many country
stations. Her youngest daughter listens to "The Joint" when she's in
town, because she's a Reggae lover. And I like the Classical Music
station now and again, 150 for comedy when I wanna laff. And every now
and then I listen to a baseball game on XM if I can't get it on AM or
FM.

Don't much care to hear much more news than I get watching the evening
news on TV, but I do have St. Louis traffic/weather on my last preset.
Damn, I'm starting to sound like an XM commercial...

Thanks! I saved your message in case I want to go that route. I
finally decided to put it where Steve put his - on the top of the
inner fairing just above my front/left speaker. I velcroed it down,
and ran the wire into the faring where the clutch cable goes in, and
back out where the rest of the wires for the Garmin come out. Only way
anybody is going to steal that antenna is cut the wire, which would
lose the USB connector. Either that, or have enough time to get the
rubber grommet out, snip a few zip-ties, unscrew the Torx screw that
holds the lower fairing cover in place, and run the wire all the way
back in and out again, like I had to do to get it installed in the
first place.
I also hunted around online for a mini-stereo cable with right-angle
connectors, so plugged into the Aux input on the stereo looks real
nice, as well as where it plugs into the Garmin unit.
Too bad Garmin didn't make a much more secure way of attaching the
Zumo 550 to the motorcycle mount. The "secure screw" is fine and all,
but you can easily back out the thumb screw that holds the top half of
the mount to the ball and socket joint, and make off with the GPS unit
without using any tools.
Have one of your choice on me, and thanks for the great info.

Hey EZ!
Last week I bad-mouthed the Zumo weather add-on. With the latest
software update, I take it all back. If you press the XM icon on the
main screen, there is a new weather feature that give you the local
and regional current conditions, plus the forecasts for several days
out. Not a lot of detail, but definitely handy.
