Post subject: WUDI VI Question
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>dirt (more info?)

If I get a motel in Arkadelphia (right off of I-30), how far is
the drive to the Train Robbers staging area?

Also, having never attended such a gathering, what would be a good
time to arrive at the trailhead on Saturday morning? I'd hate to get
left behind and spend all my time trying to find everyone.

I'm planning to leave Dallas at around noon on Friday, drive to
Arkadelphia/Caddo Valley and check in at the motel, and then get up
Saturday and drive up to Train Robbers.

At the end of the day, I'll drive back to the motel and rest up
for Sunday. Then I'll get up Sunday and ride for a few more hours
before heading home (probably leave out of TR by around 3 or 4pm).

The hotel I'm about to make reservations at is the Best Value Inn
($35.99 per night). Just off of I-30 at exit 78, Arkadelphia.

Good question, and one that I have no answer for. I get the impression
that there will be groups coming and going all day, but hopefully someone
in the know will reply.

XR650L Dave and I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express Thursday,
Friday and Saturday night... we could always catch up Friday night and
fill you in on any details we're aware of.

I suspect we'll head out around the same time on Sunday to make some time
towards home.

FWIW, the Holiday Inn Express was recommended to us as the place to
stay... I don't really know why...

Must be a titty bar close by...

ROTFLMAO!!! That's priceless dude.

Anyway, back to the original question, the WUDI staging area is about a 30
minute drive from Caddo Valley and Arkadelphia is about another 30 minutes
or so west of Caddo Valley. I'd say you're looking at a good hour drive each
way from Arkadelphia. Not bad, but that's why I chose Caddo Valley. It's
just a bit closer. The Holiday Inn Express is the recommended lodging simply
because at one of the earliest WUDI rides, Jim Cook managed to cut a deal
where WUDI riders got a discount there and it kind of stuck. It's
convenient, they have a continental breakfast, and there's a Subway next
door for loading up on viddles for lunch. No titty bars around that I know
of...but I'm still looking. However, we may be able to find a Waffle House
which is the next closest thing in the time-honored MXTuner tradition Smile

As for morning ride times, it's prettly unstructured, but usually everyone
is anxious to get going so there's generally an early ride. But since a lot
of people have MX-sized fuel tanks most loops are relatively short so we can
get back to camp to refuel. If you miss the first loop it's no big deal.
Just hang out for a while and you'll find groups coming and going throughout
the day. IMO the most difficult thing about the first ride on the first day
is grouping riders of similar abilities. That process usually takes a couple
of loops but pretty soon everyone has hooked up with others that have pretty
close to the same skill levels and likes the same kinds of trails.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

So what is there in Caddo Valley to stay in? If it's 30 mins closer to
the ride/staging area, I may wanna go that way too.

Does the Holiday Inn Express have a hot tub?

I just checked the maps and the Best Value Inn that I mentioned is
only about a mile south of the Holiday Inn Express (on Valley St./Hwy
7). So I guess it's actually in Caddo Valley. And it should be a quick
trip from there, no?

I'd go with the Holiday Inn Express, but I'll need to save every
dollar I can. Since we only have the one vehicle, I'm having to rent a
car for my wife while I'm gone... in case she has an emergency or
needs to something from the store. I hope my hotel choice doesn't
cause anyone grief though. And I still appreciate all that Jim's done
(and continues to do) on our behalf!

Ooops, looks like I may be staying at the Holiday Inn Express
after all. The rate I found for that Best Value Inn was for AARP and
AAA members. Their standard rate is $59.99! Jeez, what happened to
$25.00 a night cheapo hotels! I'm not living there, I just need a
place to sleep for a few hours! Hehehe

Hi Ya'll!

There are no titty bars in Arkadelphia/Caddo Valley. One has to go
North to Hot Springs for that. (and the Thorobred track, Oaklawn
Park)

Food and several places to stay are available at Caddo Valley. Some
are cheaper than the Holiday Inn, even with the special deal for Wudi6
attendees.

There is a bed and breakfast, The Barr50, on Hwy 84, just about a 10
minute drive from the property. It is reasonable, and I believe they
have cabins, a lodge, and rooms above the stables. It is located just
south of the riding area, about 7 miles away through the woods. The
horse trails join with the riding area, but I don't know exactly
where.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.arkansas.com/attractions/attr_detail/id/22837/t/l/r/Ouachitas/city/Bismarck" target="_blank">http://www.arkansas.com/attractions/attr_detail/id/22837/t/l/r/Ouachit...city/Bi</a>

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.arkansas.com/ext_link/url/http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ebbonline%2Ecom%2Far%2Fbarfifty%2F" target="_blank">http://www.arkansas.com/ext_link/url/http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ebbonline%2Ecom...ar%2Fba</a>

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://direct.where2getit.com/bbonline/bbonline.cgi?height=300&width=300&miles=2&did=http://www.bbonline.com/ar/barfifty/+target=_top&PHONE=%28501%29+865%2D4757+-+%28888%29+829%2D9570&EMAIL=bclayb50%40ipa%2Enet" target="_blank">http://direct.where2getit.com/bbonline/bbonline.cgi?height=300&width=3...miles=2</a>

I checked mileage today. It is approximately 12 miles from
Caddo Valley to Bismark, and 1.4 miles from the 84/7 intersection at
Bismark to the turn-off of State Hwy 7 onto the road leading to the
Property.
It is about 4.7 miles to the campground from Hwy 7

It takes me 30 minutes to get from Caddo Valley to the campground.
Do the speed limit. The whole of hwy 7 north is a speed trap. It take
30 mintes at the posted speed limit.

From all the hotels/motels in Hot Springs, it takes about 25
minutes, except for the Vagabond and the Clarion (16 minutes).
The Knights Inn, next to Majic Springs, on Hwy 70 East, is
$39.95/night, and has secure parking. It takes me about 28 minutes to
get to the Property from there.

I posted a "route sheet" to get to the ride on rmd just a little
while ago. It contained suggestions for the ride, and ended with a
short ride report.

I'm marking the three loops directionally.
Basically "one way traffic".
I figure this will cut down on accidental head-ons. If someone knows
that they are riding backwards on the trail, they should only go fast
enough to make the riding easy, and keep a good look ahead.

The area is open to public recreation. We are liable to be shareing
the trails will horsback riders, hikers, atvs, and mountain bike
riders. Standard trail ettiqette applies.

We will have "Bail Out Points" marked with cards, and cards along the
roads at intersections, showing the directions to camp by the road.

At every intersection on the trail, on the direction needed to go, we
tied a 3" wide ribbon. Often , we tied another just down the trail, in
plain sight from the turn. We didn't put any ribbon between possible
turns.

The first loop is okay to ride without a guide, if one keeps an eye
out for "the rut", possible turns, and flags of yellow Moose Track
ribbon on the trees.
Because of logging, it is suggested that the second and third loops
..be be ridden in "guided tours" the first time they are travelled..

There will be also be a "close loop" in the more gentle terrain that
encircles the camping right-of-way. I will card this loop, to allow
parts of it to be shared, with diminished confusion, with the other
three loops. It will be a good warm-up loop and a fun woods trail for
everyone.
Any children, or anyone else wanting to stay close to camp, with
close and easy bail-outs, will need to pay attention to the cards, and
not the ribbon. It is a big piece of ground. A wrong turn and someone
inexperienced could find themselves in advanced terrrain. Wandering
about, they could get turned around pretty easily.

It was a little wet today, but nothing bad. Mostly, it was
"faaaantastic!" to be rolling the humps on the fire lanes with the
front wheel in the air and slipping between the trees on those
off-camber downhills.
Deb's Pampera (Saturday) has a fantastic and beautiful engine.
My Sweet Baby's engine requires a bit more attention, from the extra
power, but the ground clearance and suspension made the ride so much
more fun, end easy on my body. More than doubled the speed I traveled
the trail on Saturday.
I had no incidences Saturday.
I fell off my bike twice today. <G>
No damage, but will be a good camp gathering story.

I would really like to have an EC125 chassis with a 250 Pampera engine
in it. That engine is amazing.

Can't wait for the Wudi.
It's going to be a "Hoot!"

And, I will volunteer to lead any forays in to the wilds of Hot
Springs if an exxploratory search of the local titty bars is
unorganized. (It's not like the "Old Days", when there was a healthy
selection of at least 8 working Gentlemen's Clubs in Hot Springs. But
there are three similar establishments in operation that I'm aware
of.)

It's 6 miles (10 minutes) from downtown Arkadelphia to Caddo Valley.
It's 5 miles up I-30 from the Arkadelphia exit to Caddo Valley.
I think that Caddo Valey is exit 78.

I think that the Best Value is right across from the Wafle House. 200
yards from the Holiday Inn.
Eiither that, or it's the one downtown. If it's at the exit, 78, it
will be across from the waffle house.

Thanks for the additional info, Jim! The B&B sounded good until I
discovered that their rate range is $80.00-140.00 per night. Too steep
for me, but probably well worth it. There's something to be said for
the possibility of riding right up to your front door at the end of
the day ;->

If I knew it was gonna be halfway warm (like high 40's at night),
I'd just bring a sleeping bag and sleep in my truck the first night.
But I know the weather in those mountains is very unpredictable.

Here's a question: Anyone here wanna share a room? I don't know if
the $55 rate at Holiday Inn is for double-occupancy, but it's
typically only about 5-10 bucks more if not so we could both save some
money. I promise I'm not an axe murderer (I do smoke though).
