As a new motorcycle rider I heard Ducati's were the best so I had to
learn more. With not much money I found a 1999 750SS 1/2 fairing for
$3800. All i can say is that it was the closest I have ever come to
flying. Any thoughts on price and maintenance on these things? I love
it but want some advice and outside opinions before buying it.

Sounds like a fair price. SS's tend to run a little less then Monsters
of the same vintage. Alot of people prefer the 900's, so 750's tend to
be cheaper, also. Any extras? You usually come up with a bunch of stuff
that would have cost you alot more. Duc guys like to play. Maintenance
isn't bad, but maybe a little more then a simpler Honda, and more
frequent. OTOH, it's all pretty simple, and can be learned. Not a
complex motor. Is there a shop near you? Does the guy have records for
it? I'd really want to know how it's been cared for. Valve adjusts and
cambelts are critical matters. I like the 750's over the 900's, revier,
smoother. And I like the looks of the 1/2 fairing better, too. YMMV. I'm
gonna go ride my Mostro! Pro Italia's having a grand opening at their
new shop in Santa Barbara today. Gotta check it out............

Hey I'm surprised someone wrote back it didn't look like anyone had
been
on that board for a week so its cool to hear from someone. well as for
the
750ss it doesn't come with any extras and i didn't ask about records.
it
was being sold on consignment at a ducati/Motoguzzi shop. the guys
their
are way cool he even let me test drive it on two seperate occasions but
as
far as padding their pockets very frequently for maintenance requests i
don't know if i like them that much ya know. and b/c i'm a nubie to
motorcycles and engine repair in general i would guess i would have to
rely on them heavily for the first season. i'm out in Baltimore MD so
we
can only ride comfortably march-october after that gloves and heavy
clothes are pretty much needed. anyway can i ask what a mostro is? and
can
you cruise for any length of time on SS's or monster from your opinion?
thanks for your input on everything man i know what to ask about in
future
dealings. Take care.

Good sign. People who really understand not just the bike, but the
mentality.......
>as far as padding their pockets very frequently for maintenance<
Like I said, tho, it'll call for more frequent checks then a CBR, or
something, OTOH, What's a 4 cyl valve adjust and carb synch running? The
Duc's only 2 valves per cyl, and either two easy to set carbs, or
injected. Probably very close costwise......
>anyway can i ask what a mostro is? <
The Monster in Italy's "Il Mostro". Still prefer it to Monster. I'm
gonna have a friend pick me up some tank decals while he's over there.
>and can you cruise for any length of time on SS's or monster <
The best I've managed was to pick mine up from service in Santa Barbara,
rode three hours to Buttonwillow Raceway, out in the desert. Spent the
night there, did 110 track miles, then rode a three hour ride home!
In just long distance roadriding, yeah, it's just as comfortable as my
BMW. Pretty sane position. I've not done any long rides on an S/S, so
I'm not a good source of info there. I've had a 650 Alazurra S/S, a Paso
750, and now the M750.
You know, with a local shop, and your maintenence concern, you might
want to check out a Guzzi. Even more esoteric, really reliable, and
simple to maintain. Pure mechanical fun I had a Lemansified SP 1000 that
I've tried twice to buy back. Great bike, maybe my favorite ever. And
I've been riding since the '70's. Thats a lot of bikes.....Check out the
MGNOC site.

Whether or not you can ride a particular bike for long distances is a
very personal question. Most people wouldn't consider a Monster a
"long-distance" bike, especially with the stock seat, but I had a 2000
Monster 900 that I used for several 1,000-mile weekends with no
discomfort. For my height/weight/inseam, it was very comfortable,
even with the stock seat and no windscreen.

I now have a 1998 ST2 with a Sargent seat, and while it's certainly
more comfortable than the Monster, the difference isn't night-and-day
or anything like that. If a Monster fits you right, you can ride one
as far as you'd like.

On the flip-side of the coin, I have an older friend with a Harley
Electra-Glide that can't ride more than a few hours before his back
starts to hurt, so overall physical condition has a lot to do with it
too.

So being new to the world of motorcycles and not being able to look at
the maintenance logs of this bike would it be worth while if i had a
local mechanic look at the bike? Has anyone ever come into contact with
a Ducati mechanic on these groups?

The nice part is that the bike has probably depreciated as much as a Duc
ever does. For that price you can ride it for a year or two and sell without
losing a ton. You may not get what you paid for it, but then again, you
should consider that you will ride a Ducati for a year. How many CBR's turn
heads? You will learn two things about Ducati. They go fast by not having to
slow down in the curves, enging may assist greatly in speed control moreso
than the brakes. Two, It will get up to speed quickly without having to rev
the motor. SHort shifting a torquy motor can equate to very rapid
acceleration. Your legs are stronger than your arms can ever hope to be. Use
your legs to hold yourself up and control the steering with your arms.
Everyone that first rides a Duc complains about the position. At highways
speeds allow the wind to assist in hold yourself up.

Road Test- TERMIGNONI - Hey Guys, As reported earlier I purchased a pair of Ducati Performance mufflers for my 620S that turned out to be branded TERMIGNONI. Now for the road test: Excellent. I gotta say it had alot more grunt in the mid range, and the engine break under..
