Archived from groups: aus>motorcycles (more info?)

At the moment i have a 1987 Mitsubishi LWB(the high roof, dual sliding door
one)2.0L petrol. It has about 230K km on it, on its 2nd low km engine( no oil
burnies yet).
I am considering a newish van towards the end of this year and would value
some opinions.
The Mitsi is ok, but i would like one with a bit more internal load area(
almost always carry two bikes and gear and it gets a bit cramped sometimes),
and preferably the dual sliding doors( they are great, i reckon, makes it so
easy to retrieve gear)
To this end i am leaning towards a Volkswagen( ....shoot me, i used to have
a Golf ) , plus they are available with dual door thingo( although it may be
hard to find a van like this, second hand).
The Mercedes Benz MB series also has a very large cargo area but single
door.I have been told to avoid these with no specific reason. They are a
Korean engine and body with Merc badging aren"t they? Why are they bad?
Are there others i should consider? It seems every man and his dog is crazy
'bout High Ace vans but they don't really interest me.

Kia Pregios are cheapish but too small.Transits, no thanks.

Petrol or diesel or turbo diesel? any preference?

Looking to spend maybe 15-25K

Volkswagon transporter or the turbo diesel Mitsubishi import like a star
wagon , both will be about 10 k for a reasonably new unit .

I had a dream about hauling a 748 to a track day in a Ducato.

Mmm, I like the look of those Transporters. Especially when you get barn
door and a flat tray inside.

Having a quick look around the manufacturers web sites, it's amazing how
much these things cost though. When you know they're just a slapped together
piece of shit with a piece of tin around it, they're awfully expensive.

A mate bought a S/H VW SWB petrol van and has cost him shitloads
to get the trans fixed and it still has a gremlin in the leccy
dept , so has another one that has stood in the auto elecs yard
next to our factory for about 2 months, so I would say unless its
brand new under warranty for 3 years forget the VW.

We have an 2002 model MB140 D LWB van at work and yup its a
Hyundai with the 3 point badge , it is definitely not a Benz ,
its just costs the same for servicing as a Benz , its gutless,
noisy and a pain in the arse just to change the oil ,BTW no
aftermarket filters available as yet ( pay again)
Gear shift fell apart twice under warranty.
Same as the VW I wouldn't buy one.

Stick with the genuine Jappo stuff with a Toyota at least you can
get it fixed or serviced at a reasonable price and they have been
around long enough to sort any bugs.
My son drives a diesel turbo Tranny that does thousands of k's
his company have 2 of em and they are available in a multitude of
specs.

Hey a van is a van but if you have it as a daily driver then do
same as with buying a bike go drive em all. Its a lot of money
for something you hate .
