By the time I got home from visiting Bill, my Valkyrie was sounding like 4
dollars worth of nuts and bolts being rattled in a coffee can. I finally got
it torn down today and the differential is out and ujoint has exploded as
well. Lucky I got home with it. It seems the times I had it in for service
and tire changes, the splines were supposed to be lubed with Honda EP
molybdenum disulfide special grease. I suspect it was not done with the
correct grease and that is why it went out. I learned from this to never
have anyone work on my bike unless I just can't do it myself. Parts (only)
to repair are about 1700 give or take a hundred. You Valkyrie boys pay
attention and lube them splines with molybdenum disulfide grease and nothing
else. Or get ready to spend the baby's milk money.

Just a heads up for Ed. If the Venture's splines are not lubed
properly every time you change a tire you will experience a similar
problem. I have heard stories of them being shipped dry from the
factory.

The first sign of dry splines is a slight ticking noise coming from
the shaft drive when you are backing the bike up. If you hear it, it's
time to grease the splines.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble. Honestly,
I can't tell you whether my Valk has been lubed or
not. I've never seen it exposed. But, as I mentioned
in my "Wednesday's ride report", I've picked up yet
another puncture, so the rear wheel will be coming
off soon.

I do recall meeting another Valk guy at one of the biker
joints once. This guy was showing me his car tire on the
back end of the Valk. I also recall him saying something
about a u-joint serviceability shortcoming. But, I don't
recall any spline conversation. Quite frankly, I've had a
number of tires installed, and I doubt that anything other
than just the tire install was done.

When the wheel comes off next time, I'll make sure that
I take a look at it for an assessment of condition.

Thanks, for the heads up, though.

I visited the valkyrieriders forum to see what they had
there concerning your problem. Although it is mention-
ed, it's merely anecdotal, and there's not any mention
of the lubing process, supplies, interval, etc.

However, I have found many other references to the
problem here:("valkyrie" & "splines" highlighted)

Check with some of the dealers and shops that do trike conversions. There
are a million GL1800 rear drives out there and I'll bet there are a few Valk
units sitting in a shop store room or in someones garage. I see a lot of
stuff on eBay so you might also check there.
Good Luck..
