Okay , well I love what Ducati can do for underseat exhaust, but WTF is
up with Honda? All their underseat exhausts look like mufflers on my
snowblower... no style at all! Of particular offense is the CBR600RR

Anyone else agree?

I've never really gotten underseat exhausts. I mean, what's the point
other than to roast your rear? Surely it's not being done for engine
performance or for ground clearance, because if it was all the MotoGP
bikes would have them.

I like the undertail exhaust......not sure why. I tell ya though Suzuki
needs to put the butt ugly muffler on the GSXR1000 under the seat where no
one can see it.

It seems like it would add more weight rather than save it. That seems
like a lot more plumbing to get the pipes tucked up under the seat.
Side exhuast seems simpler and lighter. I can see it making sense if
you had saddlebags like the VFR...

Why not flip intake and exhaust on the engine? that would make the
pipes nice and short. Smile Plus the intake would stay cooler for more power.

You couldn't flip the engine over. Gravity plays a big part in the
engine oiling. You are right about it not being the best way to get rid of
the exhaust. MotoGp has stubby little pipes or practically empty pipes(no
muffler really) Dual exhaust is also more efficient for a big horspower
engine. Another thing is the shapes of modern fairings are not the best.
Round like a globe is the best shape and we are using a wedge really. It's
all to make the bike look good to the public I guess. So they do undertail
exhaust for me I guess. Smile

I meant as in rotating the cylinder&head 180 degrees around a vertical
axis...

The standard of transverse engines in both cars and bikes has been to
have the intake in the rear, and the exhaust in the front and wrapping
under towards the rear. My Mazda3 car, though, has things switched
180 degrees like you suggest.

Perhaps the Mazda is better designed. Smile

All I can think of is the warm engine would better protect the intake
side in cold or wet weather (if the intake was at the rear). There has
to be another reason...

I totally missed what you were suggesting Smile I suppose it going to have
to do with scavanging exhaust gases away, possibly even the resonance
frequency of the intake box and ram air, Now that you mention it it is a
very interesting question.
