Apologies for on topic post.
After a couple of weeks of the brakes seizing a bit for a couple of
miles on my '04 Tiger I threw it at Alford. Bros. in Folkestone to
have a look at.
They're not a Triumph dealer, but I work about 30 seconds away from
them so it seemed sensible to give it to Alford's (who have a good
reputatiion) than to take it to either Ashford (15 miles away) or
Maidstone (30 miles away) and they took the brakes apart and cleaned
the calipers & seals which cost me £107.56 inc. VAT (£95.18 labour for
1.8 hours + £5.88 sundries & £6.50 Silkolene brake cleaner) but
they've put an advisory on the invoice:
"MAY NEED REAR CALIPER SEALS"
As they're not a Triumph dealer they don't have the price to hand and
didn't want to guess, but said if I wanted them replaced then they'd
have to do a run around with the frame number, order the parts and
then fit them.
Any ideas how much rear brake seals might cost for a Tiger?
Ta.

About a tenner at a guess but the calipers'll need splitting again which
will be the expensive part.

The same as they would for the equivalent Honda badged Nissin caliper,
or in fact just about any brake piston with the same diameter.
Eddie posted a link to a company who did replacement seals a while ago,
maybe he still has it.

About an hour and a half to strip, clean and fit new seals. Suzuki
Bandit 1200 seals are the same as the calipers are identical Nissin 4
pots. Full set of seals is 50 quid retail from Suzuki, probably at
least twice that from Triumph, plus labour.
Beav's right. I would have done it cheaper with seals.

TBH I would have done the job myself for that sort of money.
Unless of course you dont have a garage or the tools to do it?

50 quid? when I did my Trophy callipers, it was 60 quid, but that was seals
_&_ pistons.
About 3 years ago mind ewe! ;o)

You're probably on about a single rear caliper, I was talking about two
fronts.
The rear caliper on a Trophy is the same as a Trident Sprint, I rebuilt
one of those last year - cost 30 quid for each piston and seals.

That'll be what it was!
Had a terrible problem with the rear on the old bike. Rebuilt the calliper
and bled it off the bike hanging up the calliper in the garage. That sorted
it.
Never rebuilt the front.
Sorry, I forgot that it was the rear, another "senior" moment ;o)

You've got 8 brake pistons on the front of a Tiger and Triumph supply
the seals as individual piston/seal sets - at 30 quid a pop that aint a
cheap rebuild when you can buy a full set of identical seals on their
own for 50 quid from Suzuki. I just remembered that the 50 quid price
was for the 6 pot Tokicos fitted to the GSXR1000 and Busa, 4 pots would
be cheaper still.

Highly unlikely. Tigers do suffer from rear brake binding, but it's the
slider pins that need attention, not the seals. Take the caliper off,
pull the two halfs apart, clean the pins with emery cloth, slap on some
grease then refit. It's a 30 minute job at most.
While you're at it, remove the pad pins from all the calipers & clean &
grease them in the same way.

Wot 'e said. If the pins don't clean-up get some new ones in. I take
the Tiger's brakes apart to clean them from time-to-time before they
become an issue. >> Stay informed about: Triumph rear brake seals |

You always seem to be taking the brakes apart from time to time.

It's like when I did the rear calipers & pads on Christofire's Seat. The
caliper pistons have to be "wound back" using a special tool (which I didn't
have) but even borrowing one from a pal, requiring a 15 mile round trip
didn't make it into a 100 quid job. In fact, IIRC, it cost him the parts
only BUT, if I'd charged an hourly rate in line with everyone else in this
trade, it wouldn't have cost 100 quid in labour.

When I renovated my old VN, the brakes were absolute shite for that very
reason. I expected to be buying new pistons and seal (or at least seals),
but on close inspection following a thorough cleaning, all that was needed
was a "smoothing" of the original slide pins and a smear of high temp
grease. They were as different as chalk and cheese after the rebuild and
they've never given me cause for concern since. That was 4 years ago too.
We've definitely moved into a "Service = replace" way of thinking nowadays,
rather than "Service = inspect, clean, maintain"
