So, many years of hitting the tracks with various bikes and suddenly, after
all this time, I learn something!

After hours of internal debate, close up rewinds of where Shawn was
obviously faster and where I was or wasn't, lots of speed contests with new
R1's and Hayabusas and sv650's with an occasional RC51,Aprilia twin or ZX6R
for good measure, I have reached a conclusion! Or two.

A gixxer 750 can't out midrange much of anything. 600's, Busa's, you name
it. 6K just isn't in the works. Having said that, 6K on the 750 also doesn't
lose other bikes either. I didn't get pulled even down that low by anyone
much, I just didn't make much headway.

Unfortunately, I have developed a literbike habit, which, when combined with
a bike with the overrev capability of the 750, means I have driven 3
different tracks now, and have been able to run them all in a single gear.
No shifting of any kind...which...while amusing for us lazy types, doesn't
lend itself to outside passing of bigger bikes. Watching Shawn go around the
outside of a gixxer1000 which then proceeded to hold me up because I wasn't
able to be as ballsy, that was a bummer. Most of my tracktime since the late
80's has all been literbikes or near literbikes.

I have reached a conclusion! For optimal speed, the 750 must be ridden like
a 600. 2 sets of tires, 3 different tracks, yes....it is time. No more 6K
corner exits just to save myself the shift entering the corner, corner exits
will now be 9K or die!

It might help to have some lower gearing, Shawn is using like 3 or 4 gears
while I am midranging around in 1. Plus, on some decent sized straights I
still haven't needed fourth, its all been 2nd and 3rd tracks. Maybe down 1
on the front and up a couple on the rear. Anyway, I have learned!

I might also mention, I am hearing more rumors of our local track closing
down for good first week of November. Forever. Bike nights ending within a
week or two, the track gone in November. Trips to Pueblo might be mandatory
now for cheap tracktime. Bummer.

2nd Creek? That really sucks.

Ain't that the truth. 6 months ago there were persistent rumors that they
would get an extension for another year, but lately that rumor has been
replaced with "its toast...and soon"....

And the replacement track hasn't been funded yet. The CMC is working on it,
but they have a 2006 start date, earliest. Which means unlikely I suppose.

Now...if they get THAT place open, good deal. Its a more full size track,
not much further away, I wouldn't mind a bigger place than Second Creek.
Pueblo is not bad except for the transition from dragstrip waiting area to
dragstrip, and even thats okay considering the size of the corner. Pueblo is
also a good bit faster in general than Second Creek. But its also 60 miles
further away.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Just 9k? You should be about ready to bang off the rev limiter by the time
you've got it straightened up and flying toward the next corner, right?
Isn't that closer to 14k or more?

Glad you figured it out. Now stop being a lazy shifter and report back after
you've had some experience chasing the rev limiter on the 750. I know at
least two people (including myself) who would be very interested in what you
have to say.

You would amazed on the speed range on this thing between 9K and 14K. I know
I am. I'm serious about riding an entire, 2.4 mile track in a single gear
without giving up alot to anybody, anywhere. I get beat, of course, but not
because I'm exiting corners with 6K showing on the tach. The street gearing
on this thing must be set up for orbital escape velocities.

Oh...I've chased the rev limiter....but only at the end of a decent sized
straightaway.

I say....NUTS!

I plan on hitting Pueblo again within the next 2 or 3 weeks, hopefully, and
I have decided to implement my new SHIFT procedure. Which is to say, I will
use 4th down the straightaway, I will use 2nd through most of the tighter
sections, and I will do this while at close range with a modded 600 who is
shifting like crazy all around me. And then I shall KNOW!

Its good to have buddies with similar speed bikes and with similar or better
skills on it...gives you something to chase and mess with. I'm guessing, if
all goes well with the new SHIFTING procedure, it will only accelerate his
conversion of his R1 to a trackbike...and then the REAL fun will begin.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It already has. New bodywork has been ordered... buying rearsets and
clip-ons tonight on e-bay. I'll be shipping off the extra rear shock to
"Aftershocks" this week. Maybe the forks will go over December/Janurary.
Looking for a hi-mount slip-on that's quiet enough in case I happen to
venture off to Laguna-Seca anytime. (any suggestions?)

Maybe look for something that's manufactured to European street legal specs.
Arrow comes to mind. Maybe Quill? I'm just going on the hunch that they're
way more concerned about noise over there than we are over here, being that
we're all a bunch of rednecks to some degree.

Or there's always some of the "street" versions of the popular systems. I
know Yoshimura and Hindle offer quieter baffle constructions in their pipes.

If I were you, though, I'd probably just buy one or two take-off OEM pipes
from Ebay, or better yet from your local Yamaha dealer, and swap 'em out
with your loud-as-f**k race pipe if you ever get to Laguna Seca. On my first
R1 I dropped it on the right side pretty early on and put a little ding in
the pipe, then talked to the local dealer and they swapped it out with one
of the dozens of low mileage take-offs they had laying around the shop. The
price? A case of beer for the mechanics to share.
