Direct experience and observations on tank bags that
work well with a 749? Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael,

Your request prompted me to dig out my Oxford Sport tank bag that I used on
the ST2 and ST4s and try it on the 749. I've not been anywhere yet on it
that needed a tank bag so it had to be tried sometime before the spring!

The magnetic flaps were not too bad, there were enough magnets in contact to
hold it firm. I have used this bag fully laden on the ST with tools, camera
etc on holiday and on fast weekend runs with mates. It has a short
adjustable strap that goes around the headstock with quick release clips,
and this prevents it from sliding backwards at all. This makes it quick and
easy to remove from the bike when parked up and the tail ends of the strap
clip together to make a kind of carrying handle. There are also rucksack and
single shoulder straps stowed in the base of the bag that can be useful.
I have used it in the rain, and whilst I did take precautions by putting my
wallet and camera in zip up bags, it didn't get wet inside as it was behind
the fairing.. One complaint is that the map compartment is a bit tight with
A5 size maps ... but it's OK.

Observations on the 749 are that the riding position is different enough to
the ST's that it is not comfortable leaning over the bag. I have quite long
arms and 6' tall, and the bag was digging me in the stomach.

My conclusion is that one of the Oxford Humpback Sports bags would be ideal,
as it would not dig in then.

Oh, one thing ... being a bit paranoid about scratching the tank with the
magnetic base I caught sheet of "wonderweb" which if you have not seen it is
a rubber mesh that can be cut to shape. Costs very little and saves chaffing
of the paint by trapped dirt. A piece of this lives permanently on the
bottom and when the bag is removed form the bike the magnetci flaps fold
under and clip together out of the way which also happens to trap the mesh
so it goes with you! Works well.

I took some pictures of it on the bike .... not sure if I can pt pics in the
replieson this group but if not then I can email them if you are interested.

Hope that helps
Cheers Henry, UK

I'm 5'9" -- I assume that this would exacerbate the problem... ?

I'll look for one. BTW, some might wonder why I'd even want to
sully the poor bike with a bag, and suggest I should just buy
a Multistrada (when budget permits!), but it's to carry clothes.
My riding suit doesn't fit over civvies, and the black-red-yellow
leather jumpsuit thing puts Maitre d's in a tizzy.

If you don't have a place where you can make them web-accessible,
I'll do it. Email them to me at this address. Thanks for the
research.

My leathers (esp the zipper) have marked my tank. I figure
that this is a matter of becoming acquainted with a shop
competent to paint motorcycles. I'd like some additional
colors for the fairing, too, please. Wink

In answer to my original query, wouldn't you know that
Ducati sells a tank bag for the 749/999. It fits well,
and also changes the shape of one's wallet: local
price quoted as > USD 200.00.

They charge a premium for buying from them directly --
prolly don't do a lot of ecommerce, do they?
