My wife and I need something to ride the trails with with our kids . They
ride XR50's so we are just talking trail riding.
I have always been a Honda man but I don't know which of these bikes would
be better. The Yamaha TTR-225 or the Honda CRF230F .
Who has these bikes , opinions and which would you pick ?
Thanks,
Iowa883

I am just afraid a 125 or a 150 won't have enough power. Or maybe they are
geared right. My fat a$$ weighs in right around 200 lbs.

Stay away from the TTR-225.

The TTR-250 is a much more enjoyable ride, and you should probably
consider the TTR-125L, and the CRF150 as well as the 230F.

I had bought a TTR-225 for a girlfriend a few years back.
I did ride it.
It is just fine if you are short.
it is under powered, but geared low.
I had no problems with it.
she LOVED it as a first bike.
Key word there. FIRST bike.
I now have a wife. Not the same as the previously disclosed girlfriend. I
got her a XR100 to go riding here in Iowa. She loves it.
I had first gotten her a nice CR125. That bike is now for sale. TOO much
bike for her.
Just my opinion.

Crf230, bullet proof, e-start, adequate suspension, my oldest was
getting some good air and never hurt it. The ttr is also a good bike but
never ridden one-not much help i guess

I have a CRF150, which is basically the same bike as the CRF230 except
for the displacement and electric starter. My 11 year old rides it
and it is a bit too heavy for him, although in other respects it is a
good bike. I am thinking of selling it and getting a KX100 instead.

I have mentioned before.. there was a guy racing a CRF150 at an indoor MX
track this last fall / winter, and he was blowing away guys on much bigger
bikes. Box -stock too. He was flying that thing all over the place. He
looked like he would have been roughly 180 lbs, in his forties.

Good luck.

It does OK except on jumps. I weigh about 175 (5' 10")
and I can bottom it over a 6' jump in our front yard. I have climbed
some pretty steep hills on it. Just keep it revved out in second.
Acceleration is not great. In fact my son can smoke me in a drag race
with his little Suzuki DS80 2-stroke. For recreational riding and
plonking around I like it. For going fast I much prefer my '03 WR250
or my daughter's '01 KDX200.

I had a similar Q. awile back. The people in this group were very helpfull.
I'd like to return the favor.
There are things you should consider.
1. How long are you planning to keep the bike and how much you want to
spend?

The CRF230 is this years model of the old xr200. Not much tech. upgrades.
Mostly fancy plastic and a few more CCs. XR200 has been around for a long
time. You should be able to find a decent used one for much less than a new
CFR230. That way if you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for
it.

2. Are you getting 1 bike for you and your wife to share or are planning to
get one each? What are her abilities and size requirements?

I'm not going to go there unless you answer this question in the group. I'd
have to write a novel to cover all the options.

3. Don't be surprized if you get "hooked" and what some ride time outside
the family structure.

If this happens you will find yourself outgrowing (so to speak) either one
of these bikes very quickly(probably the first week). They are both lower
end beginner/play bikes. There are several good trail bikes with more power
and adaptability than TTR & CRF. KDX220(green), XR250R(red),
KLX300(green), TTR250(blue), DR250(yellow). These bikes are also in the play
bike spectrum. They are not race bikes. I listed them in order of my
personal preference. Flame if you will! Each one of these have thier pro's
and con's but would offer you much more in ridablility and growth as a
rider. They all will also be trailable with the youngsters.

To answer the question you asked: Both bikes are ok and similar in
performance and quality. Opinions will differ depending on the person you
ask. I have talked to people who love the TTR. I have talked to people who
love the CRF. Have you had to kick start a 4 stroke after its warmed? The
e button can be a life saver.

I hope this helps.
