Hi Ed,
I've owned a Burgman An650 for a year now.
It's quick (up to 180 Kph) powerful (two up no problem) and the
quietest motorcycle on the market.
It's not an automatic, rather a CVT transmission like in the SUV
Murano and almost all snow mobiles.
The only real styling difference between this and a conventional bike is
that you don't have to throw your leg over the seat , it has a moderate
step through . For me this is great, due to a back problem.
The FI is smooth and very efficient. Braking is more than adequate .
Acceleration is faster than any domestic car and will outperform a lot
of cruiser style bikes.
Seating position is very comfortable and lends itself to long hours of
riding with ease. The foot position is fully variable so no cramping
there either.
This is a very well designed ,state of the art motorcycle that will
give you a ride so quiet, vibration free and smooth you feel like you
are riding on clouds .
The 400 series highways are not a problem, the twisted mountain roads
are taken with similar ease , no shifting up and down the range finding
the right gear to accelerate or slow down for the next curve . The
transmission is always in the right gear.
I have rode many motorcycles . This is the best one yet , bar none.
Scooter ? it's as much like a scooter as an FJR is like a moped.
I guess I am a little biased but try one out .
Here are a few Burgman sites that might interest you .
Yahoo groups Suzuki Burgman and Burgman 650 . There is a great German
site called AN650.de that has been in existence since 2002.
