Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>harley (more info?)

Hello folks. Have a cold one or five on me.
I'm interested in buying an Evo Dyna, most likely a Superglide because
I'm not into lots of chrome or short shocks. I've been searching around
the net for information on Dyna and Superglide history and I haven't
found too much yet. Wondering what years the Superglide was a Dyna
Evo(as opposed to the FXR frame Evo or the TC Dyna). I'm assuming that
there were a few crossover years when HD sold the FXR as well as the
Dyna. If anyone feels like rambling on about these topics I'd love it.
Also, wondering if the last few years of the Dyna Superglide are more
reliable and/or better performing(better brakes perhaps?) and what type
of problems are common with the Evo Dyna.
Currently riding an '04 XL1200R. Great bike but I'm looking for
something a bit larger and more comfortable for longer rides(although
I'm sure I'll miss the cornering). I would consider a brand new
Superglide if I could afford it. That grey Evo motor is very attractive
to my eyes though and I sometimes see the '90s models listing for under
$9K.
Any and all info and opinions will be appreciated. My apologies to the
hardcore Sporty riders, you folks are top notch and tough as nails.

Jon

Thanks for the info guys. Another round for everyone. I had no idea HD
put out the FXR2/3/4. Very cool FXR site Chilly! From what I've read
over the years(that would be the last few years) I believe the Dyna to
be less of a vibrator and since I don't really like numb hands when I'm
doing 70+ mph for extended periods of time I am more interested in the
Dyna. You '03 and back Sporty riders are true warriors for dealing with
those vibes and a narrow frame to boot. I am not so tough myself. I'm
rambling now.

I can only afford one newer HD so I will need to sell my XL to buy an
FX. Having both would be nice if I had the bread but I don't.

I suspect that the last few years of the Evo Dynas were the ultimate in
performance, features and reliability of the Dyna line. (many Sporty
riders prefer the '00-'03 over the '86-'99 models ... talking about
Sportsters again for a second)

After doing a bit more searching here I found a ten year old thread
discussing the '95 to '96 Superglide changes- NEW FRAME(!), lower seat
height, horn moved and different handlebar switches. These changes
might make looking for a '96-'98 worth the extra time. What say you
folks? Any other changes/improvements to the Evo Dynas over the years
that anyone would like to share?(four-piston calipers? sealed wheel
bearings?) Is that '96 frame really that much better? Were there more
changes to the '97 or '98 models?
I am not exactly set on getting a Superglide but I do want a no frills,
less chrome, moderate lean angle bike. So no Wide Glide or Low Rider
for sure, although I would probably end up replacing the rear shocks
anyway so as long as the front is "standard height"(sorry this is my
Sportster mind thinking here) the stock configuration might not matter
although I suspect that most of the "factory custom" Dynas were heavily
chromed, some even with lowered front ends(aside from the Sport model
if that was around then).

I suppose I could have just asked you Dyna riders what you think was
the ultimate year(s) for the basic Evo Dyna. And by basic I probably
mean Superglide.

'90 - '98 IIRC.

"90 - '94

Why not have both? The taller FXRs <FXRS-SP, FXRS Convertible> have
exceptional handling as well as comfort. The longer legs and suspension as
well as dual discs up front and a comfy ride give you about the best of all
worlds IMO.

I've seen $1000 to $2500 off *new* 2006 Dyna's. That's what I'd do if I
were in your shoes.

Cheers,

Dealership up in northern VT has the best prices I've seen in some 15
years on their remaining 06's. Quite a few of 'em in stock, too.

Just remember, any EVO Dyna is going to need a Carlini brace.

Don't ride home without it.

I'd get a late FXR.

But I'm predjudice......

Since your almost local you might be able to put this info to good
use...

The $1000 off was Illinois HD on Harlem west of Chicago. The $2500 off
was Chicago HD on Western. They was actually $2k off + no freight and
no prep.

Ed Eckert told me of a place doing 10% over invoice but I can't
remember where that was.

Good luck Bubba.

Just called, no '06 Superglides left at Chicago HD. Said they had a Bob
left but that is still out of my price range even with a deal. Thanks
for the info though.
