I have it narrowed down to 2 very different bikes. I'll probably buy
used unless I get a smoking deal on a last-year closeout. Looking at
2005's and newer. Can't decide if I want the maintenance-free shaft
drive hydraulic valve cruiser, or the very versatile V-Strom with the
chain drive and shim/bucket valves but awesome fuel injection.
I'll mostly use it to commute to work, with some weekend trips and
some long trips. I wanna do a deep south tour loop starting in
Missouri, down through arkansas and texas, across louisiana to
florida, up thru the carolinas, and back across tennessee and kentucky
to missouri. The V-Strom would also be great for local adventure since
they will handle some unpaved roads. I am leaning more toward the Wee-
Strom. I have also thought too that a Bandit 600 would be a good
compromise bike if the money was really tight.
Anybody got anything positive or negative to say about these two
bikes? Which would make the better tourer, commuter, etc.?

Based on my own preferences (I ride a BMW R-GW), go with the Wee-Strom.
Its upright riding position and the pegs straight down make for a
comfortable and versatile riding position. It's probably more
maneuverable than the Shadow, too.

Buy the V-Strom. Call me when you take your tour.

No contest - go for the Wee-Strom. Chain and valve maintenance
isn't that big a deal, and at least for me it'd rate a couple of orders
of magnitude higher on the grin-meter. Ain't no such thing as a
maintenance-free bike, anyway. And the Wee will do just about
anything you want, short of being a real dirt bike.

I've owned my V-Strom 1000 since Nov 06 and have put on 12,000+ miles so
far. The V-Strom is a very capable and fun bike. No issues except that I'm
on my second set of tires. Wink I use it for fun and commuting.

Keep leaning toward the Strom, you'll like it. Check out
www.stromtroopers.com and http://11109.rapidforum.com/ for more info than
you'll ever need.

I traded in a cruiser, Suzuki Volusia, after putting 14,000 miles on it in
less than a year, because I didn't like it for long distance touring.

Could this mean you need 2 bikes to be happy?
It's okay to be a bike poligamist. I too have sinned.

I have a Shadow 600 as my first motorcycle (bought it this year and learned
to ride this year).

I have to agree about the seating position issues, and that is apparent to
me even though I've never owned any other motorcycle. The pegs are far
enough forward that you can't stand up if you want to. A different frame
style would probably be better.

Also, the motorcycle doesn't perform all that well. It will get on the
freeway fine and cruise fine, but it doesn't have all that much zip. I
think it has 40 horsepower.

It's not too early to make reservations at Hunt's Lodge. One weekend in June is
already booked solid - every cabin occupied.

Oh, and get the V-strom. There's no comparison for serious riders.

I have a collection of (mostly dysfunctional) bikes (and trikes)
that I'm not very happy about. Except when I'm riding.
