An interesting thought, it's possible that Glen knows his guns and that's why
National Geographic used a Beretta in the re-enactment of his capture.
I don't know much about guns, I saw the barrel sticking out of the slide and
thought it must be a Russian or eastern European design.
But, with your identification, I looked up the Beretta website and found this
nice spare parts drawing:

Beretta describes the reloading method as "short barrel recoil system".
Apparently the barrel itself recoils a short distance, forcing the slide back,
ejecting the cartridge, and then the recoil spring pushes the slide forward,
loading another round.
I was wondering just how far the barrel has to move to accomplish this
process.
