ROTFLOL, Saddle. What's so funny is that John, the guy who has the
GSXR that Troy sat on during the Colorado trip, took a day off work
yesterday to do the 191 run, solo. 730 miles in 12 hours. Anyway, he
got clocked at 104 and the cop threatened to cuff him and haul him off
to jail. Below is his ride report from our local "scratcher" mailing
list.
Hopefully, with John's permission.
---------------------start Johns's report-------------------->
Took the day of work, and made a Alpine run. I hadn't done the loop
that Steve and Deb did on Friday; from alpine, 180 thru NM, Clifton,
back to alpine on 191.
Left house at 6am. Went to Globe, thru Salt River Canyon, took 73 and
260 over to Eager. Fast breakfast, left Eager at 10am, and headed down
191 to Alpine, doing the 180/NM portion first. First time on road,
awesome high speed sweepers - just about every corner is taken at 80
to 110mph. Rt 78 into Clifton was also cool, reminding me of some
Colorado roads - road unwinds into the valley. Reached Clifton at
noon, refueled and headed up toward Alpine. The bottom section of 191
was not great, but better than the other times on the road.
About halfway up 191, I round a blind corner, and there's a little,
dark brown bear walking across the road. On all fours, it's shoulders
were about 2.5' high, almost looked like a big shaggy dog, with huge
paws. I swerved, the bear bolted, luckily on opposite directions, and
we missed. That was the first animal I've seen on 191 on 4 trips...
Other than the crow that almost took my head off on the first trip.
Reached Springerville at 2pm, and headed to Show Low on 60. Got
clocked at 104, threatened to be arrested for criminal speed, but
written up for 90 in a 65. I'll be able to take the defensive driving
class to remove the ticket and points. First ticket in many years, but
it was well deserved. I've put 4000 mi on my bike in last 6 weeks, and
probably 3000 of those were 20+ above the speed limit. Time to chill
with the speed for a while.
After the ticket, took it easy through Salt River on the way home..
Well, I only doubled the ridiculously low 35mph speed limit in the
canyon, instead of tripling it.
Got home at 6pm. 710 miles in 12 hours. Rt 191 is just awesome.
Next time I'll add a few hours and make it an even 1000 miles.

Just last Saturday, John trucked his CR 450 motard to Deming NM and
back for a track day. 550 miles. Then he did the canyon, bright &
early Sunday,
John's quite a character. Intelligent, soft spoken & unassuming, he'd
probably bust the Firebird lap record if he put his mind to it. Below,
is a shot of him at a Coffee shop in Ouray Colorado last month.
