I went to Sydney today, past the speed camera on the Lett River at
Hartley. The poor thing has a sizable bullet dent in it. Looks like a
single gunshot, with a nice smooth dimple about an inch across and
probably the same depth. Must have been a 303 or something to make the
impression it did in the stainless steel box.
The bloke should have taken out the glass bits instead of satisfying
himself with hitting the metal.
I wonder if it took a photo of the speeding bullet.

Dent or hole? If its a dent then it probably wasnt a bullet. Dont
believe hollywood, a car door/cafe table wont stop a bullet. Either
way, they should have done a proper job of it and hung a car tyre
filled with deisel on it and set it on fire, much more effective.

The reason for extending camera set off things across lanes ( well on
Pacific H'Way and some others ) is to stop vehciles swerving to other side
of road and avoiding detection, like them big nasty overnighters in the
trucks .

Wouldn't have taken a photo of the bullet. (Nor would the one have taken any
pictures of a crop-duster.)
These ones aren't radar or lidar operated, they are triggered by sensors
(which use magnetic fields, something to do with the steel belts in your
tires (so if you're bike is one of the ones that doesn't ever set off the
traffic lights, you're _reasonably_ safe from the fixed cameras too). So
unless bullet/crop-duster were travelling _very_ close to the ground, no
photo.

Nope. They're pressure-activated. The lines sunk into the road are hoses
which squish when something heavy rolls over the top of them and the
surrounding tarmac and the resultant spike in gas pressure triggers a sensor
at one end.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Speed Camera targeted |

How do the digital cameras work?
The fixed speed cameras detect the speed of vehicles by using piezo
electronic detectors embedded into the road surface. These piezo
detectors deflect slightly when a vehicle is driven over the detectors,
which then triggers an electronic device that accurately measures the
speed of the vehicle. If the speed of the vehicle exceeds the legal
limit then a digital picture is taken of the offending vehicle.
I note that the Concord Rd camera has had road work, and they dug up the
side of the road opposite to the cameras. Both sides have now had
tarmac relaid, you can't see the lines for sensors the way you used to
be able to.
So it looks like Concord Rd takes pics from the front now, and someone
on the MCC list said they are upgrading all metro cameras to do that.
Front Numberplates here we come....

I THOUGHT LIKE TRAFFIC LIGHTS THESE SENSORS ARE ACTUALLY INDUCTIVE LOOPS
WHICH DETECT FERROUS METALS
YEARS AGO I ALSO THOUGHT THEY WERE PRESSURE BUT I WAS WR WR WR WR WRONG

That is *so* wrong from so many differnt angles. Failed
high school physics did we?
On the basis of IK's assertion, I'm gonna ride like a maniac
