Hi all.
As some of you may have noticed, I have got a Street Triple.
Like it's big brother, the Speed Triple, it comes with twin round
headlamp, with no off switch.
When the ignition is on, the lights are on, and they are 55/60W each and
they warm up the glass very nicely.
As some of you may also have noticed, I am a firm believer in the
principle of being different makes you noticed.
So, I thought of two things, one was to fit an on/off switch for the
head lights.
The other, a more adventurous one, was to fit a BI-Xenon HID bulb to one
of the two lights. Kinda like
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BI-XENON-HID-CONVERSION-KIT-H4-3-For-Motorcycle...ke_W0QQ
So far, so good. Today, however, the package arrived from Hong Kong.
It is scary.
It contains a thing that looks like a bulb, which I expected.
It also contains a ballast, whatever that may be, and a control box, as
well as assorted bits of wire.
The instructions with the stuff has several different diagrams of
wiring, none of which make any sense to me, but do have lots of dire
warnings of high-voltage electricity, and don't look directly at the
bulb when it's lit.
Anyhow, any of you lot done this kind of thing? Any hints?
regards,

hey I am a sparky.....
I learnt all that 17 years ago...
I forgot it 16 years ago
I shouldn't have believe them when they said "here, put your tongue on
this"
explains alot really
mh
(thats right, the starter shorts out, bypasses the ballast to give a
full supply to the tube to create an arc, once struck the ballast
limits the current...... "here, put your tongue on this".....MMMMMM

follow the instructions!!
disconnect the battery!!
I would run tail from the light circuit or switch to the work bench,
make sure it is fused.( bike's lighting fuse is OK, but another
wouldn't hurt if you want to be over cautious)
wire everything up as per instructions on the work bench
reconnect battery and test from the safety of a few feet,
If it all works, then it can go on the bike, but remember disconnect
the battery again while wiring it in, there is probably enough kick in
these units to at least hurt or blow Johno's pacemaker into orbit via
his nose, if it hasn't, why take the chance
I would solder and heat shrink any joins, but thats me.
it should be as simple as supply in and supply out,
and dont use your tongue to test

Think you should have kept the Honda mate
Disclaimer: I ain't a sparky...
Fluro's have a Ballast in the to (I believe) sort the pulses that AC
seems to do. On DC NFI.. but it would be a balancer of some kind.
Johno <back in his corner>

Yes, well some of the showers and thunderstorms have been cutting into
my riding time.

Thanks for that, anyway. (not breaking mine)
I may well drop back to setting up the fancy lamp on the RZ250.....
simpler, single head light, with existing on/off switch.
I've often wondered what that bike would be like if I could ride it in
the dark.

That's part of the problem, the instructions show power in and
connection of the new bits but no clear indication of how this then
connects back to the existing wiring.
> and dont use your tongue to test
Ah, that's my mistake.
My father used to fiddle about with electrical things, and always got me
to switch them on and off the first few times.

Apprentices are cheaper than test gear!
"Hey, grab that wire!"
"OK"
"Good, now don't touch the other one ..."

I'd guess that the ballasty thing is probably the igniter.
Probably best not to put your tongue on its output when it is live

its scanning and taking photos time!!
if you can scan the instructions and take photos of all the bits, I
might be able to help...
I could never work on a help desk, I simply have to see thing in the
