Which version?

They are rather splendid. Though it can be a bit frustrating when your
mate in the states changes the channel on your Sky box when you're
watching something

It's tempting to parse it as some sort of erotic apparel for kinky

Slingbox Classic.

http://uk.slingmedia.com/go/slingbox-classic

I wasn't expecting much, after all the RRP is £99 and it only cost me
£20 but I'm very surprised at what it does the quality.

I plugged it into my TiVo and, japped an aux cable in for 'normal
telly', stuck the remote dongle in front of the TiVo, stuck an
Ethernet cable into it, gave it POWER and the lights went on.

After downloading and installing the Vista software (doesn't appear to
install drivers, just an application which talks to the slingbox over
the LAN) it was very, very simple to set up with the wizard. It asked
me what country I was in and what I had plugged into the back of it, I
said Digital Video Recorder then TiVo and it just worked. Then it
asked what I had plugged into the coax port which offered a list of
normal analogue telly, DTTV (free to air), cable tuner box or cable TV
but without a box. I selected DTTV, it searched through channels and
gives the same line up as the built in DTTV my telly does (not that I
ever watch it). I didn't think it would have a DTTV decoder built in,
which was a nice surprise.

For TiVo I get the full TiVo remote control displayed on screen
complete with all of the logos in exactly the same way as they are on
the normal remote and I can click all of the buttons and the Slingbox
sends them to the TiVo.

I've got the SlingPlayer running on the right of my screen in Forté
Agent now and QI has just started on "Dave" - the bitrate over my
wired LAN went to 2779Kb/sec during the titles but is sitting at about
1400Kb/sec, but sat at 600Kb/sec during the weather on BBC News 24.

I also installed the SlingMobile Player on my Nokia n95 and watched
some of Have I Got News For You on my mobile which was the same
quality as the old BBC Breakfast Podcast, and even had stereo sound.
That was via my WiFi network but switching the connection to my
T-Mobile 3G web'n'walk (which is £7.50/mo unlimited) gives exactly the
same quality as over WiFi.

>Been toying with the idea of buying one for a while now.

Not sure about the other models, but the Slingbox Classic seems to
just work and is an absolute bargain at £20!

One can alter the screen sizes on the SlingPlayer, stick it in
widescreen, letterbox, etc., put the remote control into basic mode or
full mode or turn hide it entirely.

Here's what it looks like at the moment on my screen:

It "placeshifts" your set top box or just normal telly.

Here's an example of someone using the OLD version of the Slingbox
software on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo3Qrr9iNxg

The SlingPlayer buffers a few seconds of video before it plays it to
stop skipping, but when you're using the remote control options on the
SlingPlayer it skips to Right Now whenevery ou press a button to get
rid of the lag which is why the audio shudders for a few seconds after
pressing stuff.

Also note that the current (ie. new) SlingPlayer software is a lot
prettier than that and has proper views of remote controls.

While watching the video you might think "But, err, I could just turn
the telly on and watch it" which is true, but the Slingbox will also
stream the same stuff to me on my mobile phone, laptop, etc. So I can
watch everything that is in the above video sitting next to my TV, or
while on holiday in the far east, away on business or on holiday. As
long as there's a broadband internet connection I can still watch it.
