I finally got around to working on the old shovel today. It hasn't been
started for a month or more. The starter would just not crank fast
enough to fire off. I even tried kicking it over with the electric and
kick start at the same time to no avail. A couple weeks ago I took the
battery out to have it load tested at the nearby Pep Boys. It tested
fine. So today I tried running a ground from the starter directly to the
battery. It seemed to crank a tad faster but still wouldn't start. Next
I decided to replace the battery cables and see if that helped. I
removed the battery ground cable, the cable from the battery to solenoid
and cable from solenoid to starter and stuck them and the battery into
my saddlebags and rode over to Mancuso's Power Sports location next door
to the neighborhood Pep Boys. They had only 15" and 17" cables in stock,
2 of each. The 15" were long enough but I ended up having to buy a 17
and two 15's to replace all three of my old cables. The ground wire only
needed to be about 6 or 8 inches but I put a 15 incher there and a 15
incher from the battery to solenoid and used the 17 from solenoid to
starter. Bike fired right up and I went for a short ride to pick up some
victory cigars to celebrate. The Power Sports parts department also had
a battery in stock in case the cables let me down but they didn't. It's
good to know I have so many parts options so close to home. Mancuso's
Power Sports; Republic HD; Yamaha Motorsports South; Stubbs Cycle
Southwest; Cycle Gear; BMW Motorcycles of SW Houston, etc. etc. all
within just a mile or two or three. I like it. I also have Osborne's for
those hard to find shovel parts. They always seem to have what I need
though they are a bit farther away. So it was a great day for riding and
I got both bikes out on the same day which hasn't happened in over a month.

Glad you got your bike running again. You could get some heat shrink tubing
and another battery cable end at Pep Boys and cut that long cable and
soldier the end back on to the correct length. >> Stay informed about: Shovel running again |

====so it was them dagGum cables afterall. When I do all those
different checks, trying to narrow it down, I often wish I'd started
at the last''one'', instead of the other three or four
previous''checks''. (hineySights, they call it) Good Job, Harold,
I imagine the shovel is glad to be back on the streets and overpasses
in Houston town...........................Mr.JayT=== >> Stay informed about: Shovel running again |

That sounds like a lot of work and I don't kinow if my soldering iron is up
to the task.
Besides, the excess can't be seen without removing the seat and if you don't
tell anybody, I won't. <g> >> Stay informed about: Shovel running again |

Yessir, I am glad I didn't spring for the $100 battery the fellers had
available and instead checked out the cable situation first. After removing
the 3 of them I tried twisting the ends to see if any of them were obviously
loose. The ground cable had one end that would barely twist so it may have
been just that cable that was hurting the starting circuit. Anyway I an sure
glad to have it back on the road. I think the bike was happy too.

Hey Harold, there's another hardcore biker guy like you at the Y.
Thursday in the drizzling rain and cold, I noticed a shiny big BMW
motorcycle in the parking lot of the Y. Friday it was there again, in
the drizzle and cold, so I thought maybe somebody had just parked it
there, til I noticed the dude in motorcycle gear. He's not only hardcore
enough to ride in the drizzling rain, he rode in the cold and rain to go
exercise. I could see if he was going for bbq sandwiches or something,
but to exercise? damn! >> Stay informed about: Shovel running again |

Damn, that is hard core. I don't ride to go exercise, if I was that serious
about exercise I'd ride a bicycle. I do ride to my softball games though.
Mostly to work and back and some day if I can ever retire, a nice long trip.
