Gabe, Flash, and I spent yeaterday working trail off Deb's Pampera.
(Hell of a trail working bike!)
My son, Gabe, is promoting the Turtle Cove Gran Prix on the weekend
of February 14 & 15. It will be the first round of the 2004 Arkansas
Hare Scramble Championship Series.

The trail surface is typical South Arkansas firmly packed sand, and
is thickly covered with alternating stands of pine and mixed hardwood.
Even after a few inches of rain in the previous week, the trail was in
great shape, with very little mud. The traction was absolutely
fabulous. There are NO rocks, and only small gentle rises in
elevation.
The trail bed has been packed by repeated passes of the pro-level atv
racer, Jaython Seals, who's father owns the property. Jaython mostly
rides TT, and is also contesting the new "6 hour" series, which
culminates in the 12 hour race in Iowa.
Yesterday, Jaython was riding a custom built TRX400R (with a '04
CRF450R engine installed. Sweet! Flash was on one of those new 700cc
V-twin Kawasaki sport quads (over 500#!). They did a 1/4 mile drag
race running on the levy of the pond. After getting the holeshot, the
Kawasaki seemed to flatten out about 70, and the Honda slowly pulled
away. It was wild to watch, as they bounced over the "not completely
smooth" dirt.
The Turtle Cove Gran Prix will be located three miles north of
Sparkman, AR. The sign-up will be on the west side of Highway 7
(1229 N HIGHWAY 7 SPARKMAN, AR 71763-8672, US), with the start of the
race in plain view of the highway.

Short Ride Report:
The sky was overcast, and the air temps were about 50. It was
perfect for working and riding, without having to sweat too much. I
like that. <G>
As I said, I rode Deb's Pampera. The traction was so good (even
with the stock knobbies) that it felt like I had spikes on the tires.
I didn't go real fast, but played trials rider mostly.
For a trail that was cut off of a quad, it was amazingly tight,
with some really fast straights connecting the tighter sections.
With the two ruts everywhere, it was often necessary to hop back and
forth between the ruts as they wound amongst the trees. There were
minature berms for days.
The Pampera was a hoot to roll back and forth. I spent most of the
time standing up and playing Body English games, daring the tires to
break looks.
Even though the bars are not shortened (Deb said that she's not
going anywhere that the trees are tighter than 32".) I had no real
problems getting through without putting a foot down. The handguards
kept things tidy as I drug by those trees right in the apex of the
sharper corners, which are nearly all defined by gaps in the trees.
This race is on higher ground than those we put on here at
Smackover. I have a feeling that it is going to be a classic ride.
Feb 14 & 15. It's a shame that I'll be at Indy that weekend.
