My GasGas125 and XR400 are unwilling stable mates - my XR is sitting
at the end of the bike line, and my GG (whose kickstand was among the
missing when I got it) is leaning against my XR. Yesterday, I found a
big puddle of oil under the bike. I thought for sure the GG dumped it
out of somewhere, but was suprised to find the underside of the motor
dry. Turns out, my XR's shock seal simply exploded and the shock
puked it's oil out nto the floor. Odd, since the bike has been
sitting doing nothing for close to a couple of years.
Personally, I think my XR disabled itself on purpose - jealous of all
the sexy aluminum frames sitting all over the place. Either that or
he was trying to scare off the nasty 2-stink that was suddenly leaning
against his side. Poor baby.

Hmmm. You saying that made me recall something I read on Drew
Smith's site:
http://www.werproducts.net/suspension.php
Hard anodizing gives your fork tubes and shock body a smooth, low
friction black coating that reduces wear and friction. Hard
anodizing is especially recommended for XR shocks to extend the
life of the shock body.

Anodizing aluminum shocks is somewhat debatable. If the body is cast, the
high silicon content could make anodizing spotty. USD fork tubes are
usually extruded, therefore a good candidate for anodizing.
In general, aluminum shock bodies are inferior to steel. Both Ohlins & WP
use steel tubes for the piston body.
