We have to recognize that Val's worth 0.5 to 0.7 sec. And he's better in
race than in practise.
We miss now the Ducati

You fail to mention Checa's 2:02.885 qualifying lap. And Nakano posted a
2:03.342 in qualifying. In the Saturday morning practice where Checa posted
that time you mention, Rossi was at 2:03.939, only a quarter second faster.
And Nakano was at 2:04.029 in that session, faster than Checa and only a
tenth off Rossi.

Over Checa, maybe, and at Sepang, which is a very long lap. In 2002, Biaggi
qualified a half second quicker than Checa on the M1s, it was a larger
margin in practice, and he won the race, more than 24 seconds ahead of Checa
in 7th. Being faster than Checa was a given, wasn't it?

As I said all last year, Yamaha's biggest problem was its riders...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Mark, as you said, it's only testing...so you cannot take these times as
absolute but you can compare them...Honda and Yamaha essentially worked on
16.5 and 17" tires.
Concerning Checa I don't know but the reference was supposed to be Barros,
beating Val with the RCV.
I remember Barros has made some good winter test on the Yam and got some
trouble after (see his interview). We'll see where he is with Hayden but
Checa has been the best Yam last year, that's all.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
