Got up this morning and decided to ride over to Big Eds and see what was
shakin. I walked over to the storage building to the the Goldwing out. I
noticed it was kinda hard backing out. I was pushing it back on manual. When
I got it out of the storage, I noticed I was standing flat footed with my
knees slightly bent. That means the damn thing has a flat tire. I rode it
home which is about 200 yards if that and put it up on the centerstand...got
my tire pressure gauge and sho nuff..flat rear tire. I started to spin the
tire to see what I could see and there was a shinny nail head. I went ahead
and aired the tire up to 42 PSI and let it sit while I got all my stuff
together to go. I figured about 20 minutes went by and I checked the
pressure again and it was holding. I rode straight to the Honda dealership
and they refused to fix the tire. They said they dont fix tires anymore that
they only replace them. I asked about a new one and it is 250.00 installed.
I told him I would pass and try to find someone to fix my tire since the
tires on the bike are pretty new. I left there and headed to meet Big Ed
since he was buying lunch. We went to Dickies BBQ and one of Big Eds friends
joined us. I ended up not getting my tire fixed. Someone told me to take it
to Discount Tire or Two Wheel World. I guess I will give it a try again on
Thursday. I plan to ride it to work all week as long as its holding air.
Thanks for lunch today Ed and I wont tell anyone that you bought a GPS.

Good idea for them not to fix'em. They sell more tires that way. I bet
a damn Republican came up with that idea.
Maybe Brians new deal will fix that tire right up.

I read all the prior replies. I had a similar event occur. I
started to back the bike outta' the garage, and it seemed
to not be rolling quite as freely.
Obviously, I've got no center stand, so I rolled/viewed
the rear tire after discovering it quite low, but not flat.
It measured around ~8lbs, and I couldn't see anything in
it. I called "Crash"(A guy around town that trailers motor-
cycles for hire), but he was at least an hour from arrival.
So, I decided to ride the bike on the 8lb tire, up to the
tire store place where I frequently get air, at the NE co-rner of NW hwy &
Lullwater.
So, I aired up the tire, and rode like hell over to High Five
on LBJ, between Abrams & Greenville. Here are the opt-
ions I was given:
1). R&R the tire, with some kind of boot patch, plug, etc.
The tire probably had only another 4K miles left, and
I'd been thinkin' of doin a replacement anyway. Any-
one ridin' a Valkyrie knows that those last 2-3K miles,
either front or rear, will sometimes make you wish that
you'd never left home.
2). Replace the tire. About $215 for the tire, $60 R&R,
Tax, shop fees, toilet fees, water fees, fees. fees, fees,
and the total right at $300. The replacement was with
a Dunlop D251, 180/70/R16. I think it's really a VTX
tire. It has much deeper tread than the old D206's,
and even the Elite III on the front. But, it does seem
to have a noticeable harmonic growl at lower speeds
that didn't exist with the D206.
I've never plugged/patched a motorcycle tire. I guess I
would do it as a temporary measure, but not sure I'd
leave it permanently. My high speed, long endurance
runs, up and down Northwest Highway, could certainly
be compromised. <BG> >> Stay informed about: Saturdays Ride |

I think I will just plug this one. Its a small nail and I dont think
it will affect anything. Theres ALOT of tread left on that tire plus I
dont get on that wild ass Northwest Highway so it should be fine.

Speaking of....
When I plugged that tire of mine in Mexico, I rode the Bird on the
Autopista bagged out and at speeds in excess of 150mph. Never had a
problem, wobble or second thought. The way the plug works, there's NO
WAY it'll fly out. >> Stay informed about: Saturdays Ride |

=I agree with you <BG>, there's no sense in riding on a patched

remarked, do it when necessary...yes by all means...but a coupla

I got mine @ Grapevine Kawasaki and paid ~$40 for it. Like I said, it
was the best money I've ever spent....it's saved my ass twiice from
the side of the road, once deep in Mexico (and you know what that's
like) and it still has plenty of plugs left to save my ass more. >> Stay informed about: Saturdays Ride |

Meaning, that by the time your wear down to the last
2-3K(maybe 1-2K) miles on a Valkyrie, the overall
ride/handling has deteriorated enough to make you
wish you'd stayed home.
At least that's been my experience. And, I only have
familiarity with the Dunlop D206's.
The ride/handling deterioration comes from uneven wear
on the front, and the dreaded centerline flat spot on rear.
Unless hugely over-inflated, these conditions cause poor
tracking with road crown, longitudinal grooving, etc.
I'm not saying it's impossible to ride, or even that it's
severe, it just stands out to me as quite noticeable.
Additionally, it's not just a Valk, it's all motorcycles and
many cars. They just drive much worse during the end
of their mounted tires life. >> Stay informed about: Saturdays Ride |
