The car runs doesn't it? So he's talking out of his arse. Give it a
clean and see what happens. My Scorpio did the exact same thing, I
cleaned out the connector and gave it a bit of gentle percussion and
it's been fine since. That was 7000 miles ago.

Problem: Speeodometer display broken and/or gearshifting/4th gear not
engaging (automatic transmission only)
Solution: May be caused by a broken vehicle speeder sensor (VSS) drive
shaft or a damaged vehicle speeder sensor cable. A new vehicle speeder
sensor must be installed to resolve this concern. On manual transmission
vehicles the routing of the vehicle speeder sensor cable must also be
checked and secured if necessary using a cable tie.
Honestly, just clean it up, or replace it. It'll be fine. It might log
an error in the EMS but as soon as it finds the sensor working it'll
work fine. The error will clear itself after so many cycles.
