That's true enough, but I think Vale has it wrong there - it's Chaz
Davies who raced in Superstock (actually Supersport) and finished 13th
(actually 32nd, pulling out after running as high as 6th). And, although
he'd raced in 250 GP before, Davies is only 20 and was drafted into the
MotoGP race without even enough time to review the rules and adjust the
controls, and was out there figuring out the bike while the others were
on their 2nd session. During his first weekend racing at Laguna. Now
that strikes me as dangerous. Kurtis, on the other hand, is 28 and has
been racing professionally since he was 16, has won AMA SB races, has
raced in 250 and in MotoGP, has been on the bike for several rounds now,
and has had countless hours on that track. And I don't recall him ever
running SStock...
The other thing about his comment is the bit about Roberts being in the
middle of the track. Well, that's an unusual little section of track
there, as they come out of that long 180-degree double-apex lefthander
onto a very short "straight" which is actually as much a dogleg right
and then into a 90-degree righthander. If you try to cruise through that
stretch off the racing line you have to cross it at least once and
probably twice, and the line between the corners is a bit of an odd one.
Now Rossi might have felt different had Checa, on the racing line all
the way through five, had gotten in his way on his final hot lap, or had
it not been his buddy Marco in the dirt...
He also gives it to Michelin pretty good. I wonder what their execs
think when he says things like "You have Ducati fans, Yamaha fans,
Rossi, Stoner, Capirossi, everybody. But nobody is Michelin fan or
Bridgestone fan" and "I trust in Michelin. I don't know why, I don't
have a reason because Bridgestone is a lot, a lot better than Michelin"?
