I am reading Long Way Round. It is a road trip book about the trip last
year of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on BMWs from London east to
Siberia and then boat to Alaska then on to NYC. Man what a trip!
These two definitely are not posers.

They do an awful lot of complaining, though. If they wanted to be left alone
to experience the places, why did they sell it as a TV show?

I went to Amazon to check it out, and perhaps buy it. Once I read the
reviews by those that bought it at :
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0743499336/qid=1109364574/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-7630661-6828911" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0743499336/qid=1109364574/sr=2-...ef=pd_b</a>
(reader reviews are about half way down the page), I changed my mind. Seems
the only one that gave it a positive review, was some one that didn't read
it, lol.

I've you've ever traveled in the 3rd (or 4th) world, you'd know that
as exciting and as interesting as it is, it ain't always _fun_.
Complaining goes with the territory.

There's a great book that expounds on the phenomenon - Bad Trips:

I've been to Bolivia and Guatemala. I still think it's a badly written book
by a couple of whiners.

& I'd rather get stuck in the mud for 12 hours with 75 locals, a
screaming mother and her 4 brats with some unknown disease coughing
all over me in a 1947 bus with no seat padding & built for midgets,
driven by a suicidal maniac on a cliff-hanging road in the
mosquito-infested, bandit-plagued highlands of Mindanao than read the
book right now. Some day I may read it though, and I might agree with
you.

I spent a very long night 2 years ago riding on a bus in Bolivia, next to an
old woman who had never taken a bath, apparently, in her life, who was taking a
bag of garlic somewhere. True story.

Are you willing to swear that this has nothing to do with any antelope's ass?

I'll bet an antelope ass smelled better.

No, because I would have been glad to see an antelope's ass that night. I
settled for bribing a cabbie USD $100 to take us four hours to the next town.

Gosh. That's really roughing it. <snicker>
(I doubt I'd have the courage to admit that, though. Good on ya.)
