Well it looks like my riding days are over. I have been experiencing back
and neck pain now for a year or so, well more than usual. Had xrays done
and I have a couple of vertabrae in my lower back with fractures and C6 and
C7 in my neck also have fractures, explains why the back of my head goes
numb. Will bide my time let them heal and see how I go in the next 6 months
or so.

Anyone else have similar problems and still ride?

Adrian

Sheeeee-it! Any news on what's causing it?

I have to admit, sounds like a cue for strategic withdrawal.
Or possibly just stop sleeping in that cement mixer.

Best wishes, let us know how you go even if you do have to
give it up for a bit ...

Adrian
I had or have similar probs.
only came about after a few years of a nagging pain in the neck and numb
fingers in the left arm. The expert a doctor at Prince Alfred looked at
it and diagnosed the C7 had growth around it and was causing a pinching
of the nerves. remedy was excersize and healthy living. The cause Go
Kart running over me and a the numerous falls from dirt and road riding.
At 44 he said an operation wouldnt do any good. I have also found a few
other guys in thier late 40's expirience the same thing but all have had
some sort of accident years before.
I ride a TDM which I can throw myself around on sit upright and lay flat
if i wish, does the trick for me. Couldnt and wont give up riding , at
47 I find it comes and goes, less I do the more its there.
Good luck with it and if you wish email offline..
Cheers Mark.

There are a few blokes up this way with stuffed backs who ride trikes,
very laid back riding position. Might be an alternative?

cheers, Bill

Cant quote the numbers, but I had 4 vertebrae with compression fractures in
the upper and mid back when I was 18(rolling a Mini Moke will do that to
you). Did all the physio, light duties for quite a while (my job at the
time did have some lifting, which I got out of). Had back pain for many
years through winter till I got a water bed. I'm now 46, my back has not
given any trouble for years now. My knees are another story.

You could always something like a leadwing or a K1200LT. They're just like
sitting in an arm-chair. Also, getting a VERY lightweight helmet would
probably help. (My Shoei X11 is very good for that, if a little pricey.)

Dont know I havent had any accidents to cause the fractures. At the moment
my arms look like a drug adicts arms with all the blood tests to find out
why, how they can tell from blood I dont know. I should have said I also
have a piece of bone about 6mm long detatched from the front of one of the
vertabrae.

Funnily enough, I couldn't ride my mate's Z1300 or XV750 after my spinal
injury because the upright sitting position made every little bump jar my
back.
My Ducati Pantah with it's clip-ons and lean-forward riding position was no
problem though, as my weight was much more on my arms!

(sticks beer in an envelope, slaps postage stamp and a FRAGILE sticker on
it, and mails it to Queensland)

At least one of the (relatively-speaking) old-timers from the sit-up-and-beg
days gets it...

Doesn't that all depend on just how big your stomach is?

That's the beauty of it. It works on compression. If you're skinny, it's
your stomach muscles which do the job. If you're of more generous
proportions, it's like settling into a beanbag...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have crushed Lumbar 1 & L2 from boat & bike crashes.

After the latest incident, a social-engineering lying bastard scheming turd
fuckwit prick of a surgeon convinced me that just hitting a large bump could
make me a paraplegic. Said that scans showed that I had osteoporosis, (loss
of strength and mass in bones) and that the slightest impact could be dire.

I eventually saw a bone-density-specialist who said (approx) "You've come
off a bike at about 80 kmh, hit the deck, the bike has hit you, and you've
only broken one bone in your back. There's nothing wrong with your bones.
They look less dense on the scans because you're a fat bastard, that's all".

Changed my life back to normal again.

Have you tried different bike set-ups? I can't ride sporty-type layouts
where I have to force my head back to get it level, but anything where the
footpegs are directly under the seat and the 'bars are reasonably high is
fine.

Exercise on a weights-machine to strengthen your back muscles might help,
too...it helps me. Steroids are good, too. And pain-killers. And booze,
of course, but only for pleasure.

Life is too short to give up without a battle. Cardigans and Hyundais are
for old people.

That's right Hammo; I couldn't ride my old mates Z1300 but once I met you,
I just KNEW you had a big 6 worth riding so I steeled myself and, even
though it was a bit of a handful, it was a smooth ride (and, just like you
said, it didn't hurt a bit!!)
