Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles (more info?)

I plan to spend a weekend on the Blue Ridge parkway probably the
begining of October, before the leaves start to cover the road.

Does anyone have any idea, or know of a resourse I can use to estimate
how far to expect to travel in a given time period? Looking at a map
doesn't give any realistic idea, as there are so many switch backs
that a map can't even show.

I'm planning to just cruise and enjoy from Asheville, NC starting
north toward VA. No particular destination, but will have to be back
to SC by nightfall Sunday. I'm considering just heading up as far as
the VA border, then just making a break for home down 77. Not trying
to break any records. I'll have to stop frequently for fuel as my 97
Magna 750 hits reserve between 85 and 95 miles depending on how I'm
riding, and I'll probably stop for the sights as well.

Anyone with experience there?

Asheville is around milepost 380 and the NC/VA border is (IIRC) near
milepost 210. The 170 miles will be a very relaxed day on the BRP with time
for stops at Moses Cone, Price Lake, Blue Ridge Music Center, etc., etc..
You can find a large selection of motels in Hillsville, VA right near I77
(although personally, I'd look for a more interesting route back to SC). Be
aware that gas is not available on the BRP (hopefully, this will help reduce
the increasing haze), but you can usually find it on an intersecting road.

I discovered the BRP by motorcycle in 1974 and have ridden (or driven) it
nearly every year since - for my money, it's the greatest road in the
eastern US and one of the crowning achievements of FDR's New Deal.

This website has lots of info on the parkway.

I think finding fuel might be a bit difficult... But I've only been down it
once.

I just came from a 2 day in Adirondack park (lake Placid area) and the roads
are like new, lots of curves and hills and the scenery is magnificent now
with all the red and orange and the traffis is quick. I'll go back there
again but not the blue ridge.

If you ride the BRP during the week, especially in May, you'll normally find
very little traffic. And exploring the side roads off the parkway can be
very rewarding - although one often finds some gravel on the switchbacks.

Now there's a crowded, slow (35 mph limit) road, albeit with lovely views.

I've done both... I think the BRP is more of a "saunterer's dream" road and
the Adirondack area is more of a touring man's dream area. The BRP is like
an unspoiled scenic tourist trap whereas the area in NY where you were is
just plain remote and beautiful. The views may not be as big or steep as
the BRP, but you can't beat the fact that you can set your own pace, etc.

What I didn't get to do was Skyline Drive... Will have to make it a point
to travel that again some day soon.

Just got back Wed.- Two maintenance worker trucks, 6-8 harley dressers
and one BMW Sport Touring bike, and a dozen at the most of "other"
cars. Of course we hit the gate at 6:30 am Tues.
Lots of fog/deer for the first 30-40 miles of it. After that the
"traffic" picked up and there was no more wildlife. The fog came and
went all along the route. The south end has been repaved though all of
it was s m o o t h. They were just finishing the lines at the last 10
miles.

Kinda slow, maybe I'll try the BRP next time.

Thanks for the report, Joe. The pavement was getting somewhat rough in
places this spring when I last rode the BRP. Apparently, the Park Service
budget has greatly declined under the current administration and is now
hopelessly inadequate for maintaining this great road.

Many years ago, when I was a kid, our family would spend a fall weekend on
Skyline Drive, hoping to spot a white tail - now I often see a dozen of them
in my yard in the Washington, DC suburbs.
