Post subject: What do you Ride
Archived from groups: tx>motorcycles (more info?)

A few years ago I attended a motorcycle rally in Brady, Tx.. For those who
were riding these things back then, Brady was one of the best rallies in the
state and there was always a couple held there each year.. The little town
is very hospitable and we kinda got the red carpet rolled out for us on the
rally weekends..Poker runs were the highlight of the rally.. People were
there and there was a dukes mixture of bikes since it was an "open" rally..
Lots of customs and homemade jobs..All the manufacturers were represented..
Cruisers, Street bikes, Sproty's, Tourer's and anything in-between.. As I
recall, about 2,000 showed up that weekend.. Me, an old drunk buddy of mine
and my son rode the Poker run together.. Helluva Run and there were a couple
of "downs" Nobody seriously hurt and the run was exciting.. About halfway
through the run, some guy was pushing on of those Vespa scooters along the
shoulder of a little state highway.. Since we were pretty far out from
anything, I pulled alongside and asked if he needed help... "Nah.. hell, if
I need to, I'll pick it up and carry it.. not too far to a little store, up
there".. He was smiling and laughing, cheerful as he could be.. He also had
a rally sticker on his headlight.. Noticing the little store didn't look
like it offered gas.. Old.. I'm talking OLD gas pumps in front.. mom and pop
kinda country place.. we stopped.. Sure enough ..No gas.. The guy with the
scooter pushed it in and I offered to siphon some gas for him.. He looked
around the store for a bit and came back with four bottles of rubbing
alcohol.. "I'm good " he told us.. You know.. that thing fired up. spit just
a little, backfired and that guy was on his way.. still laughing, waving at
everyone passing him.. having one helluva good time..He didn't win the
"run", but I seem to recall that he got some sort of prize..I watched that
guy all weekend.. he had more fun than anyone at the show..On the way back
to the metroplex we ran into him again, in Brownswood.. That guy lived in
Palestine and he rode that little Vespa to all the rallies around the
state..RODE IT.. I made some kinda remark of amazement about it and that ol'
drunk buddy, who's been riding motorcycles since he was about ten..(lotsa
years) grinned and said.. "It don't matter what he's riding, he's on two
wheels and he loves to ride".. This coming from a guy, who spent most of his
adult life drunk as a rat.. but, he's rode everything from mopeds to full
dress tourers.. Japs to top of the line harley's (his favorite) made some
runs that'll curl your hair.. He's right.. Nothing will compare to that
thrill of the open road and a good machine of your choice between you legs..
I ride a little Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic ..'96 model.. I bought it new ..
watched them assemble it out of the box, mostly..I detailed it like a
Heritage classic and it is mistaken for one, since I always strip the
emblems. I've run that little 800 soon be 50,000 miles on damn near every
kind of road and non-road imagineable .. Run with damn near anything on two
wheels.. When I bought it, I was shopping for a Heritage.. Never regretted
buying it and am more impressed with it each year.. It's a kinda "teal
green" color, I think.. some guy told me once that he thought it was a "gay
color".. I grinned and said OK..let's get on the road.. Later he said,
"Damn.. that thing runs, don't it." What do you ride ? No one has ever
accused me of criticizing their ride, except good natured and joking.. When
I hear someone talking about another man's motorcycle, I know, THAT is the
first sign of a rookie, with a complex.. The best bikes I've ridden is the
one I just sold, the one I'm riding and the one I have been dreaming about
and will buy, if I ever get the money... What do you ride ??

I ride a BigDog Husky 2001.
I love the BigDog, been a great bike and the service and support has been
great.
I prefer the American V-twin bikes.
I am not one of those guys that think everything besides my bike sucks.
Honestly, I really don't care what you ride as long as you ride.

I think my next bike will be HD Electra Glide Standard.
I will also probably build a rat bike to run around town with.

Speed does not do much for me anymore so a fast bike is not very important
to me.

I have had several bikes both american and jap bikes.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Whoa, an on topic post !

I just got a 2003 Valkyrie last month to replace a 2000 Nighthawk 750.
Both great bikes in their own respect. All bikes are great, it is according
to the desire and pocketbook of the rider.

I had a couple of CB350s back in the late 70s'/early 80s. Great bike
also as long as you did the maintenance and did not rev it to 11000 rpm
(violated both !).

Well, I'll bite. I'm riding a Suzuki DRZ400S. Yep, a dual sport dirt bike.
It's a handful on a gusty day when you moving along. Learned that the visor
on my dirt helmet is not good to have over 50mph...but overall a fun
machine. Trail riding is my bag, but I like to get out on the hill country
roads sometimes. Just wish the knobbies liked the twisting roads as much as
I do.

No "bite".. Just a post .. Personally.. I love the highway and a long run..
Some like trails and dirt.. Don't miss the point of my post.. The guy on the
Vespa had a ball, all weekend.. Everyone there liked him.. He enjoyed the
fellowship.. He was a winner, no matter where he placed.. Back in those
days, there was competition but it was for the enjoyment of the game..
Somehow.. all this has changed over those short years.. We paid tribute to
an old guy that rode his first motorcycle in the early forties.. He still
rides a motorcycle.. The respect for this guy was awesome.. That's what I'm
talking about.. Seems like this crop of so-called bikers have lost a lot of
RESPECT.. Without it, they sure miss a lot.. and don't even understand what
it is they are missing.. What a waste.. huh ??

that's very true.

you are certainly not worthy of respect.

you curse people, lie and insult others without regard to the normal
levels of decency. you know it and so does everyone else who reads this
group. even another Mason, Brad Felmey, says so in his post. the vast
majority of readers of this group share that opinion.

you're a sick psychotic old man who needs medical help.

I didn't start riding motorcycles until I was in my late forties.. I was
blessed with a friend that knew what was going on with motorcycles..
Probably one of the best mentors I could have found.. The good lord was sure
looking out for me LOL.. He not only taught me how to handle a motorcycle,
he taught me how to survive on the streets and highways.. I have ridden many
different kinds of bikes. even a few harleys.. Ride what you can afford and
make it "yours".. BTW.. I love to read the title to my motorcycle, now and
then...

Got to get in here and say something about that. Also, though i am always
making jokes here in this ng, i dont make anything up. This actually
happened to me saturday morning.

I asked my wife terri if she wanted to go out looking at yard sales (it is
cheaper to buy clothes there than at neimon marcus plus i like it when she
hold up another wimmons bra or panties and asks the price). Anyway, the
first place we stopped at had one of those skateboard type kids scooters,
the type that fold up. It was full of chrome and brand new and they only
wanted $3. I got it for our grandson who is 5. Unfortunately, it would
not fit in the side or top case so terri put it behind her on the seat. We
then proceeded to drive all over the central san antonio area looking around
at other yard sales. I cant believe the stares I got. One biker pulled up
besides and yelled at me "is that your spare?". I wanted to crawl under the
bike and hide. I tried a couple more times trying to make it dissemble to
it could be hidden but it would never fit in the case.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
