Went out around 8 AM. Figured I'd get some miles in before meeting up with
folks at Dunkin Donuts at 9 AM this morning Brrr... 24 degrees when I left
home and 24 when I got to DD.
Got to DD around 8:45 AM and got myself a warm drink. Went back out and
suited back up. I was solo for the day it seemed. No matter. Ran up to
some really nice roads - Upper Greenwood Lake, NJ and the surrounding areas.
Dodged lots of cinders, salt, sporadic ice and pebbles / dust on the roads
but had a really nice ride. Stopped to chat with some guys ice fishing on
the lake but couldn't get close enough to really have a conversation. We
pretty much traded "you're the crazy one, not me" glances...
There must be 2-3" of snow right in that area... We have none here.
Ran down some back roads to Route 10 here in NJ via my GPS' "avoid anything
that is a major highway but stay off gravel roads" setting. Passed some
cool stuff. Either an Alpaca or Llama farm complete with warning signs that
they might be crossing the road and some bear crossing signs. Wish I had
brought my camera...
Got to the sushi buffet (www.minado.com if it matters - awesome selection
and really fresh) at around 11:10 AM and warmed up a bit. Nobody showed for
food at 11:30 either so I opted for the brownie points and ran home to the
wife and kids.
It was a great day and I racked up 97 miles per the odometer, 101 per the
GPS. Four-five hours of riding. I missed the company, but enjoyed being
able to saunter along some really deserted roads and the challenge of
crossing some ice sheeting from time to time... Some of it was on "tilted"
roadways and 20-30' in duration... I know, I'm strange that way...
Only negative of the day was on my way home... On one of our major highways
(287) and then on interstate 80, the same BMW cut me off within about 2' of
my front wheel twice. It was as if she was *trying* to put me on the
pavement... So I backed way off and simply let her go after someone else.
I only saw two other bikes today... One was parked at Harold's Deli on 46
as one of the guys there commutes on it (Sportster) and a Schwin pedal bike
somewhere on the desolate and wooded roads between 23N and 10 that I took...
The pedal bike rider looked at me the same way the ice fishermen did...
Hope to see you on the road some time and happy 2008!
