Hi. I just purchased my first street bike-- Chinese built and at 250cc,
it's a real "starter bike", but I'm hoping it leads to a good learning
experience and a nicer ride-- maybe a season or two down the road. My
last bike (dirt bike) was sold when the area where we used to ride was
made off-limits. So, I've been without a bike for about 20+ years.

Obviously, I'm out of touch with "what's out there" and was hoping for
some input/advice on resources for-- just about everything. I do have a
helmet picked out, a flat black, HJC model (DOT/Snell approved) that
allows air to circulate through channels in the helmet. I liked the idea
of that because I remember how hot and sweaty they could get inside.

So now I'm looking for gear-- boots, gloves, etc. I'd also appreciate
any recommendations on good magazines, books, websites, etc., that would
be relevant to a new rider. Also, if anyone could recommend a good place
that sells a wide variety of quality tires, that would be helpful. After
reading a comment on a blog, I want to replace the stock tires and
battery asap.

I'll be signing up for the motorcycle safety course in the next couple
weeks and the course I'm hoping to get into begins in April.

Thanks in advance for your help,

So how are you planning to maintain this Chinese built bike ?

I'd figure out my source of parts and maintenance work before
I went much further with this venture. What usually seems to
happen next is a post asking how to fix some machine that
nobody's ever heard of, let alone worked on.

Welcome back to riding. I think your oem tires and battery will be
fine for your first season back in the saddle.

Motorcycle Consumer News magazine is a good source of unbiased
motorcycle and accessory information; they do not accept paid
advertising.

Good that you're signed up for the safety course; please be very
careful in traffic and inclement weather and riding at night and....
well, just please be extra cautious until you take the class; it would
be a shame to have an incident or accident prior to taking the class
that perhaps could be prevented as a result of completing the course!

Tim

P.S. Plan to develop a thick skin if you intend to actually hang out
in rec.motorcycles for any significant length of time.... it's a
jungle in here!
