A friend and I are looking to take a vacation in N. California this
fall (drive up the coast to Oregon for a week), and renting a couple
of bikes for a day and going up the coast highway would really cap it
off (can't do bikes the whole time). However, the only bikes I see
for rent are Harleys and big Gold Wings; I was hoping for something
smaller, but still a cruiser.
I ride a Harley myself, so it's not the brand. But I'm not big, and
I'd really rather have a bike that's short enough stock, rather than
lowered. Mine's lowered.
Any ideas? Does anyone out there rent on a daily basis, preferably
for a reasonable sum?
If you could reply to the newsgroup I'd really appreciate it -- I
can't check the email address right now.
thanks

Golden Gate Cycle downtown rents several brands. I bought my Virago
1100 from them. Pretty sure they'll rent just about anything but it's
been awhile.

Wendy;
Try Cruise America. They usually rent motorhomes, but they keep a
supply of bikes on hand, too. Last I saw, they had Honda Shadows and
the like.
Cruising up the coast is a great ride, but if you're not familiar with
fog and extremely twisty roads,(CA-1 on the north coast mnakes the
road to Hana on Maui look like kid's stuff) you'd better be prepared!
Have fun!

Ha! CA-1 has 2 lanes, and you can see where you are going. Not even close.

I've driven a rental cage to Hana and back which
makes CA-1 seems more like a freeway, so to
speak. OTOH, the Rockport to Leggett stretch
rocks!

Obviously you've never ridden it in the fog!

BTDT, both of 'em, both lots of very slow sightseeing traffic, very
hard to get past.
When I did the road to Hana, though, the entire route was thick with
mangos that had fallen off the trees and rotted so I have to say
highway 1 smells better... >> Stay informed about: Renting north of San Francisco |

I used to ride it with my wife in a MR2, every two or three days. Hana
highway has more curves, is much narrower, and the curves are sharper. It's
basically a semi-paved donkey path. they both occasionally collapse, I'll give
you that.

You can try these guys: <a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.dubbelju.com/" target="_blank">http://www.dubbelju.com/</a>
They seem to have an assortment of bikes available. I've never dealt
with them myself, but they've been around for a while.

Assuming you find appropriate bikes, you might want to reconsider your
itinerary. The coast highway is beautiful, but it is cold, foggy and
repetitive. If you consider going inland, you will find equal or better
east-west motorcycling roads and many very cool destinations (e.g.,
Shasta Dam, Mt Shasta, Lassen Park(!!!), Captain Jack's Stronghold,
Crater Lake, etc., etc.).
A few years ago, I rode from San Francisco to Portland and back in about
ten days. My route was kind of a large, distorted figure 8. I managed
to put about 2500 miles on my VFR, riding every day but one. Best trip
ever, and the coast was, for me, the most boring part. At one point on
the way south I got so tired of the cold and fog that I just cut east on
the next (beautiful) road. The temperature went up about 40 degrees in
an hour's riding.
Give it a thought.
