I've been scratching my head working out how to get my left grip off the
bars so I can just whack it back on when I get the new ones.
It looks tightly attached - do I just heat the rubber and get it off
that way - then reheat it to get it back on ? (thinking like airhoses on
an aquarium) or do I just cut it off with extreme prejudice and get a
new one ?
The main dilemma is I wanna get the instrument block and clutch lever off. >> Stay informed about: Removing hand grips ? |

to get off... air compressor - whack nozzle in end of bar.... to put
back on - whack a little petrol in grip - slip on - petrol drys up[1]
grip is firm on bar.... easy

Thanks - it may sound stupid but can you explain how the air compressor
method works - do I need the weight on at the other end or something ?
I figure they're all similar but the hand grips don't cover the ends of
the bars, it just covers the bars themselves - the grips are 'just
rubber tubes' rather than a cylinder with one end open.
From what you're saying with an air compressor and my bars I don't see
how it'd work. With a handgrip like on a pushie, I can but not with what
I have in front of me (well a few moments ago).

Try also some lube - hairspray, wd40, oil, anything - and a butter
knife. Use the butter knife (which is blunt and round ended so won't
tear anything) to lift the grip away from the bar so the lube can get
in.

Ok Yeebers.... principal behind the air-compressor is ummmm yeh! -
bars are basically sealed with grips - so when you whack the nozzle in
the end of the grip - the air expands the the grip and it comes of
easily....

OK. Good idea but not usable for the grips I have.
Thanks tho, 'coz with Zebee's wise suggestion and about 1ml of cooking
oil, and a bit of elbow grease off it came.

Having read all the other responses and agreed (nod nod nod) here's
how I have done it; not high tech but born out of desperation and
poverty...
Slim but long screwdriver x2 slipped alongside the grip from the
switchgear end with switches removed first, 'straw' from WD40 or
similar introduced and squished in (not too much); wriggle grip to and
fro till grip slides orf.
To replace, yeah hairspray works great.
Cheers,

Mine, and Zebee's, are the same. Grip is a tube, bar is solid. Still managed
to get it off with air and a bit of duct tape. I suppose when you have air
you find many ways of using it.

No worries. I tend to use butter knives with cracker biscuits, blue cheese
and wine.
