Any Ideas on how to remove a stuck clutch basket nut? I've got one
that is very stuck. Some one out it back together without the tab
washer and aparently just torqed the snot out of it. I tried the rag
int the gears method and it just pulled the rag into the teeth. I read
about using a penny but as tight as this thing is I'm about afraid to
try that. The cylmer manual shows this tool that bolts to the spring
stems and has a hole in the center for your socket. I made me one and
then proceded to snap all four stems right off flush with the back of
the clutch basket. Sad Surely they dont use this tool at the dealer. I
have no idea how to hold this thing now.

Arrrgh. No fun.

Do you have access to an airwrench? This is the kind of force you may need
to get it loose - as opposed to breaker-bar type force.

Make sure you don't have backwards threads and good luck.

Hmm....Otherwise, you can borrow the rmd gorilla...

Impact wrench. One that you use a hammer on (as opposed to air) might
work.

Like someone else said, make sure that you are not fighting a reverse
thread.

Put bike in gear, lock the rear wheel, sometimes rear brake ain't enough, twist the nut... They're
stubborn sometimes. Use brute force. Good luck... Took me almost one hour on my RM125.

Exactly like procupines are mating: verrry carefully.

My only input is NOT, i repeat NOT, to use the baskets
"fingers" to keep it from turning. I once came by when
two buddies of mine were working on such a stuck nut.
When i saw them applying a 6 ft long pole as leverage
onto the clutch basket i fled, not wanting to wittness the
casualty.
Next day one of them came to work still by bicycle, asking
where one could get a cheap 2nd hand clutch basket from.

Buy "da 'xpensv tool" from the manufacturer or make sure,
you design a very good, basket friendly, holder yourself.

Motion Pro makes a clutch holder tool for about $30, like a vise grip with
long fingers that slips over the splines where the plates fit. Seems
expensive, until you break the basket or hub.

Actually, it is one of their most reasonably priced tools.

And/or use an impact wrench. If you don't have air tools,
electric impact wrenches work pretty well.

Since you're already destroyed the basket, you could also
try wrapping a big chain wrench around the basket.

Thanks for the resposes. I loaded it up in the truck and hauled it down to
the service station. The impact wrench made quick work of it!

Load it up and take it to the nearest service station. An impact
wrench will take it off no sweat.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Like has already been suggested, bike in gear, have someone sit on the
bike with both brakes applied and you should be right. This worked for
me when an impact wrench and hammer didn't.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi Guys
I see you got it off, but you lost the basket.

I use a quick fix to remove the clutch basket nut without doing any
damage. The cheapest way is to use about 4 of the old steel clutch
plates and clamp them together in a vise so that the teeth on the
inner diameter of the plates line up. Drill three holes in a
triangular pattern ( Strongest) and use a 6mm or 1/4 ' allen bolts and
nuts just long enough to bolt them together. Using the 2 holes that
are opposite each other fabricate a flat bar about 1 1/2 foot long and
bolt it onto the steel plates. Now you also have something you could
use as a weapon. Make sure to recess the flat bar in the middle of the
plates so that it is not in the way of the socket when you fit it to
the nut. Slide a bit of plastic hose on the end to use as a handle.
Get a 1/2 inch drive socket usually between 17mm to 19mm on the Jap
stuff on a power bar. Get your strongest pal to slide the sandwiched
plates over the hub and hold the handle. Put your beer down and slide
the socket on the power bar onto the nut and turn counterclock while
your pal is holding the hub. It works like a charm. This way you leave
the hammer on the peg board for hanging pictures and you do not even
wake the neigbours by hammering away and blaspheming at your immenent
loss.
Good luck

whoooaaah!!
That sounds really cool!
Sorta like the tool once displayed here (was that you Tami?)...not with
bolt&nuts, just welded together.
Taking this to the next level:
diskbrakes nowwadays have lotsa holes in them... could the "ventilated"
clutchplates still be used for normal operation afterwards?
