The term "Passing Lamps" tends to make you think there is a specific use for
these additional lights.

Does anybody know the definition of the term or the intended / correct use
of them?

I guess I'll show my age (71) and chime in ....
Prior to there being dual filament bulbs like the 1157 of today there were a
second set of lights installed on vehicles that would be turned on to pass.
They put more light down the road so the driver/rider could see farther.
As far as "correct use" goes today I have mine wired continuously on to see
and be seen. Maintaining the correct angle keeps me from blinding on coming
drivers but then I don't ride that much at night any more.

From my understanding passing lamps were called that because they were
originaly installed to be run alone. And only when passing a on comming
vehical pointing down farther than the running light. The running lights
were to be shut off, the passing lights were to be directed at the road in
front of the vehicle and not along the horizontal plane into the approaching
drivers eyes.

One problem with this is as I see it. No one uses them like this now. We
shut off our running lights and the passing lamps go off too. But, you said
they are used for what, you said to be run by them self, but the law states
that the passing lamps can be used with the dim and bright lights as long as
they do not blind the on comming traffic. Still confused?

Maybe the older vehicals were set up for a bright and dim this way and the
term passing lamps just stuck around. Maybe there was no such thing as a
bright and dim eliment in the same lamp, I don't know this part is just
thoughts, any old timers around?

Running just passing lamps in my state will get you a ticket if noticed.

Don't forget that this is an international forum with few common laws.

The DOT will tell you only two lights are to be one when you are
within 50 ft of other traffic..So all the clowns running fog lights in
traffic risk a ticket as would a bike running all three. I don't think
you would get one because even the cops understand bike safety but I
have seen it with autos and trucks.

I call them the "always on lights."

I don't run mine in town at night just on the highway. I like them on during
the day so I have extra light for the safety part. I just helped put a set
of passing lamps on a friends bike and when he followed me I saw a great
improvement on seeing him in my mirror.

In that case you may want to avoid following one Mr. Jinks around at
night..... you may have to rename them the 'stuffed-up-yer-ass' lights.
