*stands up*
My name is Brad and I am (hoping to be) a Motorcyclist.
(Group: *Hi Brad!*)
So now that the introductions are over...
I've been looking at what to get for my first bike. At this point I'm in
love with the Yammy V-Star 650 Classic. A few friends have suggested the
Honda VTR 250 or CBF 250. They have also insinuated that perhaps the
cruiser is a little much for someone just starting out.
Truth be told I don't see much of a difference between the CBF and the
VTR (I'm told the air vs water cooled thing doesn't mean a whole lot).
I'm going to take all three for a ride on Saturday but I'm hoping for
some sage advice from you dear readers, on the relative pros/cons of
each as a newbie bike.
Thanks all.
*sits down*

The bike to get is one you feel comfortable on, and you can afford to
repair in the almost inevitable scenario of the 5Km/hr drop in the car
park.
All three are good learner bikes. The VTR is probably the best of the
three in terms of performance and handling but it's going to be a
while before you
If you're extremely small and weak then the weight of XVS650 *may* be
an issue but it's pretty unlikely, if you struggle to lift it off it's
side stand then get the XVS or XV250 instead (similar but smaller). No
sexism intended but this is more likely to be an issue for women than
guys.
Consider getting an old dunger for the first 3 months and THEN getting
the shiny pretty thing once you've got a handle on what you do and
don't like about the one you first got. I strongly recommend your
first bike be the cheapest thing you can find that is still physically
sound and safe. 10-15 year old GPX's CB250's, road/trails like an XL
or DT. Keep it for a couple of months and flog it off and get the nice
bike you really want (yes I know you're not going to listen, but I
feel obliged to tell you anyway).

I'll second (third?) the "buy-an-old-dunger-250" sentiment. It's only
for a year, and not a bad idea to get the falls out of the way on the
scrappy bike before you buy a shiny new one (just ask Betty!)
And personally, I feel that the "cute post" thing is all right - it'll
take some of the heat off me in regards to the derisive ridicule.

Welcome Brad,
Unless you have LOTS of money to squander, go for an adequate bike for your
first one...learn on it...make mistakes (like dropping it whilst doing tight
turns at the servo...or putting foot down in gravel etc...there's a 101 ways
to drop a bike..at least...google it..)
Then after a few months/year...get that dream bike.
Plenty of good trusty, 2nd hand learner bikes being recycled thru the
learner brigade.
But make your mistakes on a bike you can afford to fix... or live with the
imperfections...

Aaaaargh, yeah, it's true. I cried when I sent my old,
dropped-in-the-driveway several times, cheap, fully-paid-for, insured, GPX
to Bike Heaven, but not half as much as I would've cried if it'd been a
shiny new bike - or worse still, one I might've been paying off...
You'll love your first bike, whatever it is...

I'll just point out this is not universally true.
I'm not sure I'd be happy with _just_ the Spada, but it "satisfys" me
enough that when the original one got mown down by a numpty in a HiAce,
I bought another one to replace it...

I rode 250s for some time after I got the big bike licence, and still
get a kick out of the learner legal Yam, the learner legal scooter and
the learner legal in the ACT guzzis.
For a time the "big bike" was either the Pantah or the 450 single, so
the "touring bike" was the 250 MZ.
