My kid needs a little advice on a concrete start for tomorrows mx, and I
havent raced since, well lets just say concrete wasn't invented yet! He
does a second gear start in dirt and does fine, but at woodland they
have concrete, and he killed it, I know it could just be bad
cluth-throttle work, but does anybody have any hints? He rides the crf250

Thanks

Most common problem with concrete starts is that people think they will
hook up on the concrete and loop out-so they don't get on it as much as
they should. However, your bike will get less traction on the concrete
than dirt. The key is to hold the throttle steady. Don't keep revving and
letting off until the gate drops, just grab a handful and let it go
steady-your RPM shouldn't vary at all. Then smoothly let out the clutch
when the gate drops-don't just let go of it, feed it smooth, and leave the
throttle steady. Be ready for the end of the concrete, as that is when you
will hook up. Don't bring your feet up on the pegs until after you grab
the next gear.

If you want to be really "cool", hold the front brake and spin the rear
tire until you smoke it. Lays down a track of rubber to get grip on....
IF YOU'RE WILLING TO PAY FOR TIRES OR ARE A DRAG RACER!

Seriously, though, lots of clutch, smooth release and a steady throttle,
about half throttle until the dirt. Do not dump the clutch, but a
smooth, gradual, but quick release. Once you get to the dirt, hammer on!

Here's what I like, half throttle as the pin moves feed clutch out (don't
dump)and roll throttle on at the same time.
That pad a Woodland is really slick if wet so he'll really need to drop the
R's and be very gentle with the clutch or he'll sit & spin.

My big question is,,,,,Joe, why aren't you racing???? They have a class for
you as well.

Well, lets think of an excuse,uh..............I plan to this summer at
albany, just trying to focus on my boys first year right now. Haven't
raced since I was 16, now 45 and don't know if I could keep my cigar lit
with these new full faced helmets!! Thanks for the tip, I think we are
going to madras bright and early, so he can race two classes and get
some more experience. Love your web site, you are right about meeting
great people and a few a-holes.
