Mr. Deeney..
It is time I put a clutch in my XR600... I ordered all the parts
this a.m. and will have them for the weekend.. I ordered the friction
plates, the springs, service manual and a clutch side gasket... Are
there any pitfalls that I need to watch out for ??
Thx in advance...

Don't forget to put oil back in it when you are done.

It's very straightforward, unless you need to remove the basket
itself (this is best done with an impact wrench).

Just watch for the misc. little o-ring seals that connect the cover
oil passages to the oil pump. Loosen the clutch spring bolts in
several passes, using a cross-pattern.

A cow-orker grenaded a piston on his XR600. He's parting out
the entire bike. Since his clutch and basket is in much better shape
than mine, I'm going to buy them. I'll use some of my old clutch
plates to build a clutch holding tool.

Oh yeah, look at the fingers on your clutch basket for signs of wear.
If they are rough, pull the basket out and file them reasonably
smooth for a more consistent clutch action.

Actually, my friend with the fragged XR600 has all the parts I need.
I'm disinclined to split my cases again to replace the new countershaft
with the XR part, even tho I'm seeing the XR shafts selling for $40 on
ebay (new). If the first cylinder lasted 28k miles, this one ought to last
at least 25k.

I'm not too concerned about the 1-2 gap. For the riding I do, it works
pretty well.

I am picking up the XR clutch & basket. I'm tempted to pick up
the valve cover with compression release. The compression release
would be handy the next time I have to bump start my bike when I
run the battery down reinflating tires.

Ok.. got er done... and yes.. I put oil in her... It was
time fer an oil and filter change anyways.. Clutch plates didn't look
exceptionally bad.. But I was out of cable adj. with the old ones..
Lightest pull on the lever and the clutch was disengaged. Now, with the
new plates and springs, there is plenty of room to adj.

The hardest part was scraping off the old gasket that was stuck to
the engine case and not to the cover.. Would have been easier on the
cover..

My buddies electronic/digital snap-on torque wrench is great..
Most bolts were 108 in. lbs. .. His Torque wrench buzzes and vibrates
when you hit the desired torque.. way easy..
