Motorcycle Insurance

I'm considering a new bike purchase in the spring and decided to check with
my broker about insurance costs. This quote is for Pilot Insurance Co. I
have had my car with them for many years. I am in my mid 50's and have a
clean driving record. I've also had my bike license forever. I'll include
the email I sent to my agent and his response.

<clip> and I are all settled up here in Cambridge, Ontario and doing
well. I have been considering getting another motorcycle in the spring and
was wondering what my insurance costs would be. If I do get one, it will
probably be a 2004 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Silverado. Suggested list price is
$12,799 and the engine displacement is 1063cc. I will likely want to
include coverage for my clothing which could be up to $1000 or more if you
include leather and helmet or is this factored in with the comprehensive?
This model is considered a cruiser and will have a factory alarm, windshield
and saddlebags and used exclusively for leisure with low annual mileage.
The alarm features selectable active or passive arming for the alarm circuit
and automatic/passive arming of the immobilization circuit. It also has an
integral shock and lien sensor. I will be paying cash so there will be no
lien on the bike. (No pun intended.) I have been hearing lots of horror
stories on what people are paying for their bike insurance so I thought I
had better check in with you prior to making any firm decisions.
So if you can quote me a basic rate, also collision and comprehensive
with a high and low deductible, It will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your e-mail. Glad to hear you are doing well. The rumours you
hear are probably correct. I don't have the 2004 prices yet but the 2003
numbers are $806 plus tax for basic and an additional $954 plus tax for
collision and fire and theft with a $2070 deductible! Your clothing would
have to be picked up on your property policy as the bike insurance includes
only the motorcycle and its' attachments which would be reflected in the
value. The new pricing usually comes out in March.

Sucks doesn't it?? And we can't even ride all year !!
I have my bike insurance with Primmum. They have online quotes you might
want to check out. You may find that it is a little bit cheaper. Probably
not a whole lot, but anything extra in our pockets and not theirs it a good
thing, right?
