Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles>ducati (more info?)

Wow, this newsgroups seems to be dead. The group at ducati.net is a bit of a
pain to ask questions since the group is administered via email which makes
links a bit frustrating.

Who out there owns a Monster 620 or any other monster??? Tell me how your
exhaust pipe looks. Seems to me that once the pipe heats up, it will
discolor. Some of the pictures I have seeen from older Monsters, they show a
dirty looking piple.

Now, is the exhaust pipe comming from the engine chrome, stainless steel, or
what? Can this pipe be changed out so that it won't discolor, rust, or
oxidize?

Since their is no bottom fairing to hide this pipe, I would like the pipe to
look nice all the time. If I can't get the pipe to stay looking new, I won't
drop the money on the bike. A dirty pipe makes the rest of the bike look
like junk.

This is only one of the many questions I am going to ask here and I know you
guys have the answer. Thanks!

Frank

Hi Frank,

Not dead Frank, at least not as we know it. Smile There was a flurry of
activiity here a couple of weeks ago and I guess that wore most of the
regulars out, big time. Kidding guys!

Anyway, M620. Bought one for my wife last July. The downpipes on it are like
most Ducati pipes I have had recent experience with (ST2, ST4S, M620) in
that they discolour and go a rather fetching brown. Difficult to tell from a
distance if they are brown or rusty ... not nice! They appear to be made of
stainless tube, as nothing on them ever seems to actually rust. My ST2 was
'97 and had done 21k miles when I sold it last year, and the pipes showed no
rust, only discolouration.

In the accessories catalogue they advertise chrome pipes, but as they are
Italian they probably would not last. They'd no doubt cost a significant
portion of the original purchase price of the bike too!

My intention on the Monster, being that it is the first and only Ducati that
we have that is 'naked', is to spray paint the downpipe matt black. I have
seen a couple like that and it looks much tidier. Alternatively, Spareshack
do a carbon belly pan (or coloured ones if you prefer) that would cover the
pipe at £125 which I suspect will be cheaper than new pipes.

Hope that helps. Anything else you want to ask, go ahead .. please! Wink

NG not dead. I read it daily, on average, and post when there is an
interesting question, like yours. Unfortunately, pipe discoloration
never surprised nor bothered me, even on my old 900SSCR which was
semi-naked. Even on my current 996, you can see the discoloration
despite the bodywork. My last Harley had chrome heat shields to hide
discoloration on the pipes. I like the other poster's suggestion,
though, to get a belly pan if it is really something objectionable to you.

Note that this problem is not specific to Ducati, though. Any SV, for
example, will also show discoloration on the header pipes, just to state
a bike with purpose similar to a Monster.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
