With apologies to Mr Champion as there is a slight food theme.

I've been watching Masterchef on BBC2. There seems to be a common theme
that everyone who reaches 38 or more years of age wants to chuck in
their job, become chefs or to run their own restaurants [1]. Most of
them have aspirations way beyond their abilities. Is this normal for the
mid life crisis?

And before the inevitable comments arise, no I haven't had a job related
mid life crisis myself so can't comment.

[1] the more I see of what happens in proper professional kitchens the
more I admire the people who make it look so damned easy. Looks like
bloody hard work.

I dunno - I've had aspirations way beyond my abilities for years.

I wouldn't know, because as people pointed out I haven't really grown up
enough yet to have one. That said, I find myself taking more care when I
cook these days, but I certainly don't want to do this on a professional
basis. I've known too many people who worked in the hospitality business
to know it's not for me.

It is, and it's usually bloody long hours as well.

I had all my major mid-life crises in my early thirties. The last
seven years hasn't seen any urge whatsoever to become a commercial
creator or purveyor of food.

I've had other nice crises to deal with instead.

Never - I know I am nowhere near good enough and almost certainly never
would be.

I got to around that age and had a career change from head chef to the
sleazy world of IT management Smile FAR less work, FAR less stress, FAR less
hours and FAR more money. I too look at these shows and just wonder at what
the people are thinking Smile
