But I managed to get nearly 150 miles in on 2 bikes!!

The newest carb work on the 1100 has just returned 43 mpg, mostly
poking around town on its first full tank. If it hadn't been for the
beautiful mountain scenery in my rearview mirror I might have just
kept heading east today until I got to Kansas before turning around.
It was NICE.

Changed the oil on it when I was done, put it away, and then went out
and ran the KLR for another 30 miles. Put everything away for another
6 weeks ( if necessary ).

I like the 1100. Once the rear end does something besides randomly
bounce around, and I have a decent hardpoint to put my feet on, its a
nice touring machine. 80mph is a sweet spot for it.

So now you're back to square one on the gas mileage. But what happened to
throttle response and ease of starting? Do you have the best of both worlds,
stock mileage *and* throttle response with easier starting?

There was a break in the nasty weather on Saturday morning. It dawned bright
and shiny, what pilots call "CAVU" (ceiling and visibility unlimited).

Everybody who had a motorcycle was out enjoying the Spring weather.

Looking east from Visalia, I could see into Sequoia National Park from 40
miles away. I could see Moro rock, Castle rocks, Giant Forest laid out on the
hillside, and I could even see Sawtooth Peak 60 miles away in Mineral King.

Normally, I can't even see the Sierra Nevada foothills ten miles away because
they are buried in the smog.

But it's such a sofa!

Yup. Some of the interesting characteristics of the bike are gone
though, the starting without the choke when cold, running nice and
clean everywhere including dead cold.

Now, it needs a little choke ( 15 seconds ) to run early, when you
disengage the choke it has a lower, cold idle, and as it warms up the
idle gradually comes up to its warm idle speed.

It still runs good within 30 seconds of starting, although not quite
with the same verve as it did before, and I've still got excellent
throttle response everywhere, good high end pull, steamroller feeling
all over the place.

Also, prior to this final work, I was getting 35mpg around town, 47
mpg on the highway. This first tank was mostly around town, so there
is the potential for better highway mileage, but I won't know that
until I get a tank or two through it on a trip somewhere.

It is. And now that I have a place to hang my feet the way I want to,
I'm pissed I have to use those silly hangers. They are coming off
pronto, and the engine guards are going on. Plus the new shock.

Ordered a new rear tire today, ordered a new SS line for replacing the
OEM line, scheduled to drop the bike off for the new shock and case
guard install this weekend.

What kind of range you got on the F4i before you stop for gas?

As low as 120 miles if I haul ass, like the ride to Craig and up to 160
miles if I ride close to the speed limit, usually about 140-150 with mixed
commuting and freeway miles.

So I guess that's in the low to mid 30s mpg up to low 40s mpg. She ain't no
Buell. hehe.

Good. Thats about the same kind of range I can get out of the 1100
without using reserve.

You need that new XB12XT Smile
Full set of bags, and an inch lower than the Uly.

I don't think an inch is enough for a bike as tall as the Uly.

Actually, that's 2" lower than the one you rode.
The seat was 1" lower for '07
And the XB12XT uses 1" lower suspension, along with the lower seat.
My bike is nearly the same height as my wife's Lightning.

When the carbs were fouled up, I was going about 125 miles before
refueling, I did reserve at about 140, which is 4 gallons.

A rough calculation based on the single puttering tank I've used the
1100 for so far this winter puts reserve at about 160 now. If things
REALLY go my way, it could be 180. The bike seems to get decent
mileage at a solid 80mph.

The longest I've ever gone without a gas stop is 166 miles and only because
of butt burn. I used to get over 50 MPG with the Sprint & 5.3 gallons
before messing with the ECU for the pipe. Then mid to upper forties. The SV
will do near 50 but at like 65 MPH and the tank is 4.5 gallons. But at the
speeds I ride now the low fuel light comes on (3.5 gals) & about 135-140
miles. So I could get ~170-180 pushing reserve at 80-90MPH.

I used to get consistently around 45-50MPG with my Sprint RS,
even after putting on the "race" can and adjusting the ECU. The
best it ever got was over 60MPG on a ride from here in the Sierra
Nevada mountains of CA to Montrose, CO, and back. The Blackbird
does, at best, 40MPG.
