Can anyone tell me the name of the restaurant in Inverness that served
as the unofficial breakfast gathering spot for riders heading north on
1 from Mill Valley on Sunday mornings? Is it still there?

Thanks!

There were several different restaurants, I remember there was even
one across the street from the infamous Constable McLean's house in
the early sixties. The last one that I used to go to in the early
seventies was the Inverness Coffee House on Tomales Bay near the State
Park. I haven't really noticed If it's still there--- I think not.
But I've only been up there a few times in the last decade or so. I
usually ride south toward Santa Cruz.
Which brings up a question of my own. I keep thinking that Alice's on
Skyline used to be on the east side of the road across the street from
where it is now. A senior moment?

While we're discussing Senior Moments in the Bay Area, I have memories
of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge shortly after WW2. I was about 4
years old and we were going to Mill Valley to visit relatives.

As I remember the trip, we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in the
observation car of a passenger train.

Are there any railroad tracks on the bridge now, or have there ever
been any tracks across the bridge?

I just have to find that train. I lost my little toy truck somewhere
on the trip to Mill Valley and back. Wink

Sorry, never any train tracks on the GGBridge, on it or under it. You
probably took a train from Sausalito into Mill Valley. I'd start
looking there.

We took the train north from Ventura. There must be a train station in
San Francisco.

Maybe we switched to a Greyhound bus to get to Mill Valley. I will
have to check with Greyhound to see if they found a little blue toy
truck with one side rail missing.

The "Key System" trains used to run on the lower deck of the Bay
Bridge. He could have across to SF on that, then took a bus to Marin,
or floated over on a train barge from Oakland.
(Are there any SF natives here)?

Right, the Key system ran on the bottom of the Bay Bridge, along with
trucks and buses. I beleive that the Ferries were still running to
Marin. The Train Station in S.F. was at 3rd & Townsend.

40's...freight trains continued in the same vein til the '60's.
