Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles>ducati (more info?)

G'day all,

A couple of weeks ago I picked myself up a 1997 750SS. In that time
I've put up about 300km on it. I'm having problems with the mirrors
being too loose. The left is by far the worse of the two, but they're
both sub standard. It holds its position for about 60 seconds before
pointing back down to the road...

Yep - this is a pretty lazy question, but, before I pull them off, can
someone tell me if they're easily adjustable/serviceable? Or is it due
to the plastic wearing over time. Is this a problem anyone else has
seen? Is it common?

Any tips for repair or is it better to replace?

Thanks in Advance,

Damien Sawyer

I had the same problem on my 900SS, you need an Allen key to take them
off (they actually hold the top part of the fairing on) and you can
tighten them from the inside with a phillips screwdriver. The mirrors
need pulling very foraward and very backward to get at the allen bolts
that hold them on. Bend them backwards before tightening to get the
front Allen bolts in first else it's quite difficult to bend them back
until they're secured to the bike. Bending them forwards is slightly
easier in this state.

This may be trial and error, it's easy to over tighten and make them
very stiff, I find at the right tightness I can't bend them whilke off
the bike (with my bare hands) so it's difficult to gauge how tight to
screw them.

Hopefully after all that you should a nice view of your gloves/elbows
<g> Now forget them and look over your shoulder like you should be doing
anyway. Smile (dunno what it's like down under but in the UK you wouldn't
pass your test just by looking in the mirrors, I took mine off for my
test just to be sure I *had* to use the "livesaver" look).

Definitely a common problem for SS mirrors. I had to tighten mine once
per month. Or do what a friend did -- replace them with aftermarket.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks for that Trevor!

I'll give it a go on the weekend Smile

I'll take your advice regarding looking over my shoulder as well! This is
the first bike I've had in 3 years. Whilst most of it seems to be (slowly!)
coming back - the importance of shoulder checks is not something that I'd
given much thought until now. I tell you what though, I'm 'really' missing
having that left mirror!! I didn't realise until it was out of action, but
I'm in the habbit of checking my mirrors every 30 seconds.... I suppose that
it's become part of my 'scanning' cycle.

Anyway - thanks again!

Hmmm... I don't like the idea of 'once a month'...

I don't suppose anyone can recommend some aftermarkets??

Buddy replaced his with something from Ken Sean Mirrors. I believe he
found them at Competition Accessories.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
