Post subject: Long term storage question - beyond just the winter...
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles (more info?)

Greetings,

Just put my 85 Nighthawk 650 into winter storage. (you know, full tank
with Stabil, new oil and filter, battery out, bags on exhaust, cleaned
and covered in an unheated garage in MA.)

I may be needing eye surgery and recovery may cause me to miss a
season of riding next year. I want to make sure the bike will be good
to go in the spring of 2006.

What else beyond the usual winterizing should I do? Change the plugs
and shoot foggin oil into the cylinders? Brake and clutch fluid?
Gaskets? Tires?

Thoughts are appreciated.

You're going to want to measure, photograph, and cast your tire contact patch
before you put the bike away. In the spring, do the same thing, (with spring
air, of course!) and compare the results with your fall recordings. Any
inexplicable results, get new tires, or at the very least, consult Moto before
riding the bike.

Where in MA? I'm sure we can put it to good use next spring.

Winter Storage Question - Do most of you really 'store' your bike(s) in the winter? I've Never taken a battery out of a bike in the cold weather unless there's (like) a weeks worth of terribly cold temps ahead. Sure, I use StaBil, but I also keep those bikes running. I mean,..
