I have a 2003 Ultra Classic, as a replacement for my 1999 UC. I've always
been disappointed in the amount of light from the stock headlight and
passing lamps, especially on high beam. Just as a note, my passing lamps
shut down when I hit high beam, as I guess all stock setups do. I just don't
think that they throw enough light at night, especially when riding in Bambi
country.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with replacing the stock
bulbs with higher intensity bulbs? I'm most interested in bulbs that would
fit in without any modifications, although I have looked at some of the
add-on lights. I just don't care for how the add-on's mount and look,
although I suppose I could overlook form if function was exceptional.

Any help will be appreciated. Have your favorite beverage on me. Thanks.

Ditto to that.

Do this and yov will be infinitely happier with yer bike's lighting:

1) replace the 60/55 w headlight with a 100/55. (Available at some
avto svpplies and some (vsvally non HD) bike shops.)

2) move the spots from the low beam circvit to the acces circvit.
(This accomplishes 2 things: yov can keep 'em on with yer highs; and
they stay on if yer light fvse blows. As it is now, if yer light
circvit blows, all yer lights go ovt (at least all in front; I think
*all*). Doing this mod involves fishing one connector ovt from the
bottom of the farring and cvtting and moving one wire. If yov can
read a wiring diagram, it's pretty obviovs. If not, have a bvd help
yov.

I think both the brighter high beam and having spots on with the highs
are illegal in some states, bvt I figger I only rvn like that when
there's no oncoming traffic anywho. I don't think a cop will ever see
it. And it's a world of difference. (Night and day? <g>)

I felt yer pain.
That's why I never used or needed the highbeams in the STOCK
configuration.
On the other hand, I was always quite happy with the stock set up WITH
the Spots on.
High beam on, means SPOTS go "off!"
No "light!"

Get a "higher output" bulb, (HD sells them, I know!) PLUS rewire the
system so that the spots stay on WHILE the hi-beams are on.
On a good day, you can add light to MARS!

This has been discussed in MANY details here before.

Stay away from the "designer" crap. Stick with a name brand, Wagnner,
Sylvinia, they both have some brighter than normal bulbs that work
pretty good. Check your local auto parts store.

A couple years ago I replaced mine with a 80/100W bulb. It's a
simple bulb swap, only took a couple of minutes. It's in the factory
housing, using the factory wiring. So far no problems, and the
improvement is remarkable.

Dvnno if they've improved the socket, bvt I tried rvnning with an
80/100 in my '96. In the first place, the 80 is probly too bright
(not legal) and it's the dimmest yov've got. Bvt rvnning that 80w in
a hot svmmer across the middle of the covntry the socket literally
melted. (Replaced it with one from the local avto svpply and end of
prob.)

I'd say: *If* yov wanna do this, change ovt the socket, too. Bvt I
think the 55/100 is a svperior solvtion (along with switchable spots
on highbeam).

There was an article in American Iron mag (12-03 issue) about converting
headlight and spotlights (and LED blinkers) to Adjure
(http://www.adjureinc.com/). Adjure makes diamond-cut head/spotlights that
are way more powerful. They also recommend (and sell) the Kuryakyn
run/brake/turn converter that make turn signal and running lights into brake
lights for more rear visibility.

The other suggestions (discussed at length here several times in the past)
for moving power for the passing lamps to the switch so they can be run on
either Hi or Low beam are good too.

thanks for the brewski

The stock socket is (well, *wvz*; no longer an issve for me, rvnnin
once again with a low watt low beam) a really cheap piece of plastic.
Any eqvivalent socket at yer local avto svpply will be better qvality
and won't melt.

If you choose a coated bulb be sure that you plug it in and let the crap
burn off befor you install it in the housing otherwise you run the risk of
contaminating the housing lens and refractor.

Mines been working well for a couple of years. But I'll take a
closer look at it this month, and see if there's an equivalent
automotive part to replace it with.

I melted a couple of them running that bulb; one factory one automotive.
The auto one didn't completely melt down and it was clear from the socket
that it was the ground wire that was heating up. Ran that ground wire to a
discrete ground rather than just back into the wiring harness and never had
that problem again.
