| As per Jay's suggestion, I checked with my local shop when I was in for
parts yesterday. They are asking $4700 for brand new leftover '06
CRF250X's. Not quite the screaming deal that Jay got, but a whole lot
better than MSRP.

The shop where I purchased my CRF still has '06 250 (Xs and Rs) for
$3999, and '07 CRF250s for $4999. '06 450s (Xs and Rs) are $4999.
CR125s are $2999 for '06 (checking that out tomorrow), and $3999 for
'07s. '07 CRF150Rs are $3999, and '07 CR85Es are $2199.
It's a good time to buy bikes - fallout from the tightening up of
private land riding and overdevelopment, I'm guessing.

That's pretty much in line with what my local Honda shop is charging.

The CR tiddler, after all of the bullshit add-ons (freight &
paperwork), brings actual OTD cost to ~$3450. After it's piped and
armored, I'll be up to $4k, maybe a bit more if I valve it. Still not
bad. This compares to '02-'03 models that are running ~$1500 on the
used market, mostly piped but few are armored or valved. Since most
of them will need rebuilds and cosmetics, the end difference comes out
to about an extra $1500 for brand new. After my experiences with used
bikes this past year - $1500 is cheap money.
Long story short, I own a new CR125. Even though I can't exactly
figure out who will use it, or exactly when, I just couldn't help
myself.

I found them a little cheaper an hour north, but still not the
screaming deal that Jay got.

Jay, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. :-O
Sure, you're "doing it for the children", right? Is this bike for your son?
My son's best friend moved up to a CR125, then tried trail riding. Bad
choice. This was also the bike that showed up with a bad rod the second
time out. I agree with you on the used bike thing.
So far, no big surprises on the KTM. Normal wear & tear stuff. It was hard
to justify the additional $3k I would have spent on a new bike. One thing I
learned yesterday is that the springs are too soft for the track. I had
compression cranked all the way up & could still bottom without too much
effort. Maybe the answer is to not ride at the track? Duh....
Anyone have a pair of .42 WP springs laying around?
