What life expectancy do people expect from their kit?

My boots came unstitched last week, after two and a half years of
regular (almost daily) use. I'm not sure I'm too impressed. After all,
the leather is hardly worn at all. I have DMs which I've worn in all
weathers which are a lot older than that.

I had to send in a textile jacket for repair, too. It was the same age
and the elbows were coming undone.

The gloves which I've had for about two years are worn out, but that
seems a little more reasonable: they get a lot more direct wear in the
job they do.

I don't know, perhaps I'm expecting too much of my kit, but it's a lot
of money to have to replace it all every two to three years.

What type of kit do you have, all round? I've still got waterproofs
from <thinks> 14 years ago where the stitching hasn't come undone.

And boots from about 10 years ago, no problem. The fact I can't wear
the boots now is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the actual
product.

Sometimes you get what you pay for in quality, so sometimes it makes
sense to pay out that little bit extra.

I still wear my original leather jacket, bought when I first learnt to ride
over 10 years ago. It's seen better days tbh and I fully expect it to
disintegrate on impact if I fall off. Still, I can't be accused of power
ranger tendencies.

I still have a Wolf black leather jacket that I bought from K
Motorcycles in Bedford for 65 quid in 1984. It was used daily for 5
years and saved me from grazing my skin at least 5 times. It has never
burst a seam and is still in very good condition, though it is way too
small for me now.

Yebbut my jacket is an Akito somethingorother and I believe they're not
highly regarded. I'm trying to avoid falling off.

That's about the same as mine.

I have a Fank Thomas leather jacket which has been going for 6 years
now, although it does need a bit of restitching and some new zips.

My Sportex troosers lasted about 5 years, but only need a new fly zip.

That's about what I get too, although I tend to buy those at the budget
end.

Yes it is.

I suppose that's a good way to make yourself a better rider. Wear shite
kit and learn to stay upright cos you don't trust it if you fall off.

That's what it's all about. I mean, if bike kit was priced to what it
was really worth (I.e about half) then it wouldn't be so much of a
problem.

Doesn't sound too bad for daily use.

I can destroy DMs in normal use in 14 months on average, my current
Bering jacket is 4 years old, crashed once, heavy use, still excellent.
Belstaff, as heavy use but nine years old, pretty fucked, crashed twice

Not sure if this helps as a lot depends on the quality of the gear in
first instance. Worth noting modern DMs are /shit/

I've got Akito Python jacket & jeans and they're not the best, it has to be
said.

The jeans seem reasonably weather-proof, but the jacket has "issues". OTOH
I'm reasonably confident that they'd be OK for a winter spill, where I don't
tend to be doing 150mph.

Also I got the pair for 130 quid, they've seen me through 2 winters and the
jacket has enough waterproofing to last my 13 mile commute in even the worst
rain, so I'm not complaining.

I have one of those too - maybe a few years older.
Apart from the purple lining has now gone black, and a few stitches are
loose at the seams, it's still going strong.
Mine still fits ( mainly 'cos I'm still the same fat bastard as I was
then ).

Heh, This one I have was the second leather jacket that I bought. My
first was exactly the same style but blue. For 5 years I virtually lived
in that jacket. I eventually managed to destroy it by crashing on a
fairly regular basis, and by the time I hung it in my mum's shed it was
no longer blue, but a grotty shade of grimy greyish black. After a few
years my mum got fed up of the smell whenever she opened the shed, so
she threw it out. I was gutted, I felt like a large part of my life had
been carelessly tossed in the bin.

I really rate those old Wolf jackets.

Jsp spoke:

Boots (cost £120) I would be lucky to get around 2 - 3
years use from, but then again my feet are especially
sweaty and destructive.
A normal pair of shoes would only last me around 12 months
tops.

Current jeans I bought 5 years ago for £70 at Thoresby
market, holding up well apart from a replaced ankle zip and
the 2 small zip pockets now loose things drown the trouser
legs. Jacket is about 7 years old, cost about £90 and has
had a new main zip.

Textile Jacket is RSR Millennium, 3 years old and no
problems with it so far

Everything is covered in a protective layer of dead bugs.
