OK - I'm sure that Idaspode and Murman should have something to say
about how these two bikes compare. My buddy is riding a 200 and loves
it in the woods, but it seemed a little underpowered (when compared to
the rest of us with 400 - 520's) in the desert when climbing steep loose
hills. Dont get me wrong, it still made it to the top, just not with
the same ease as the big bores. How does the 300 compare to the 200 in
weight, ease of riding in the woods, powerband (is orange the color for
this band :^) ). I definately like the light weight of the 200 and
most of my riding is TST (copywright). Just curious how the 300
compares. How does the Gas Gas 200/300 compare to the KTM's?

Thanks

Michael

I love my 200 but my next bike will be a 250 or 300exc. The 200 chassis is
small and maneuverable but the motor doesn't have the hill pulling ability
of the bigger bikes ... it's good and is sufficient in most cases/places but
sometimes I really want more power.

You're right, the 300 has oodles more power and still handles like a dream
in the tight stuff. It has a whole lot of bottom end torque and yet will
scream in the straights. You wouldn't notice the weight difference after an
afternoon.

When I had the CR500, I didn't. Wink My 250 is perfect (power-wise), the
200 is really good for 80% of the riding I do.

That's when I think he would notice the difference in weight ... "after and
afternoon" of riding the larger bike, hope on the smaller one and notice
that you have a few more miles left in you.

The 200 has great low end power and can be chugged and lugged and then rev'd
to the moon. It's a sweet bike. I still want a 300.

After lots of comparing of the 2 bikes I decided on the 300. Mostly
because you can be much lazier on it due to the low end power. The 200
IS quicker in the tight stuff but lacks the low end grunt and makes
you search for the right gear more often. Both very good bikes, don't
think you can go wrong with either one.

I agree with Mr. Murman on this. The 200 is a bit more maneuverable in the
tight stuff (a bit shorter wheelbase and lighter I think) and you really
have the feeling that you can throw it around more than a 250/300, although
nothing like a trials bike. I think for an average size and weight male
rider, the 300 is a better choice. All that zinging and gear changing and
keeping the 200 where you need the power band is somewhat annoying, if not
energy taxing as well. Both really nice bikes, but unless you are a
smaller, lightweight kinda guy, the 300 is a better choice.

Weight is really not an issue for the 04's when looking at these
bikes. The 04 250/300EXC/MXC motor lost 8 pounds over the older motor.
It's an all new design based on last years very reliable 03 250SX. The
200/250/300 are within 5 pounds of each other now. The 200 still does
have the smaller frame, which can be a good thing or bad thing
depending on the size and perference of the rider.

The 300, without any question, will be a better hill climber as far as
low end power and less work. It's 5 speed tranny is still going to
give it up in the open stuff to the 6 speed KTM 4 strokes, though.

All are very fun and reliable bikes. You can't go wrong with any of
them.
